Without knowing what you get for the money it's impossible to say whether it's good value or not; an engine with forged and dynamically balanced internals, ported head and fancy cams ready to win in historic racing might be worth that, a cooking engine with standard everything would not.

£10K isn't that much for a rebuild. When I was looking 9 years ago plenty of places were quoting 8->10K, depending on what you wanted. The 3.8 engines are the most sort after and it's hardly a surprise that an original E-Type one is going to go at a premium over a saloon one.tozerman said:

I'm presuming that it's a Crosthwaite & Gardiner engine, so it's not a reconditioned unit, this is a newly cast block with wide angle heads etc. I remember being shown a parts price list from them for bits to rebuild your original XKSS engine with. They sold bolts that you needed to be sitting down before seeing the price on them. They also came with instructions on tightening them up which didn't discuss weak proxies like torque settings, they were specced to measured with a micrometer and then you tighten them till you got the right amount of stretch. If you want a full-on lightweight fuel-injected engine from Crosthwaite and Gardner you won't get much change from £100,000 these days. My XKSS engine is road/rally with 305bhp and cost about £10,000 15 years back. The E-type on the other hand was done by VSE in 2015 and their price is around £5,000. It depends how far you want to go really; Arrow con rods, wild cams, Venolia pistons, big valves - the list goes on. Then one must consider that 3.8 engines getting in pretty short supply these days.
