Help!! Honda Civic boot not opening!

Hi folks, looking for some help/advice. I've a 2009 Honda Civic mk 8, it's been a great runner and no issues until now- my boot will not open from the outside, I can only open it by climbing through the back seats from the inside. I've done some research and seen on some forums that the boot switch is usually the fault so I purchased a new one from Honda, fitted the new switch but this hasn't fixed the problem as it's still not opening. I've read that giving the driver door a hard shut sometimes helps, again tried this and nothing helped. I am wandering if it this mechanical, i.e. The locking mechanism itself, or electrical, i.e. The wire that leads to the boot switch from the door. Has anyone had this issue before with a Civic as I've read they are quite a common fault?
