Engine sometimes won't tick over and cuts out.

Has anyone else had this problem, or know how to fix it.
My car is a Griff 500 (1996) Serpentine engine.

Not all the while, but sometimes after the engine has warmed up, it will not tick over. If you take your foot off the pedal, the revs just drop right down and the engine stalls ?

I took the car out last week, drove round for over an hour, everything ok, pulled up at traffic lights and had to keep the engine running (with right foot) it would'nt tick over. I then stopped for a break for about half hour, got back in the car and it was ok, no problem, ticking over fine. It is the second time the engine has done this.

I cannot find anything wrong, the car was serviced in December, everything looks ok.

Any tips / suggestions would be welcomed.

Maybe the Stepper Motor needs cleaning, I don't think they do this in the service.

I had this on my car last year - same age & spec Griffith.

After much searching it turned out to be the amplifier on the coil had broken down with age.

It wasnt an expensive fix, but drove us all nuts trying to find the problem.

Its horrid when you are in traffic & you dont know if your car will stop at any second - happy to say its fine now.

ps - next time you get a puncture dont forget to clean the stepper motor, it seems to cure everything

I'm thinking it might be your base idle setting. My chim' was a bit prone to trying to tick over at 200rpm when idling first thing after starting. Once the car warmed up it was less of a problem and she'd idle at 800-1000rpm as normal. Since the base idle was reset, I've had no such problems. Does yours always threaten to cut out or only while she warms up?

Since cleaning the stepper motor, I have not had the problem again..... so far.
