3 hour check in - are they having a laugh....

You can often get away with checking in 1 hour before departure if the airport is busy. I wouldn't recommend it if you are really bothered about not your flight... Also perhaps not for america either...
My best check in was the one in Helsinki where I checked in about 20 minutes before boarding started
much less hassle there, turn up, no queue, choose the prettiest of 5 check in girls and then check in (took about 1 minute - no security questions at all...). Board plane, have whole row to myself and a not even half full plane 
Perfect way to travel. Air travel used to be so great... now its a bit pile of stress.

most US airlines seem to insist on 3 hours now to allow for extra security checks, it can be a real pain but missing a flight while waiting to have your bags searched is worse.
I don't suppose it's occured to any of these airlines to employ more security staff, in order to complete the searches quicker?
Nooooo, that would be common sense. The last time I was at Heathrow, there were two 300m queues for security
IMHO it should take no longer than 90mins to process even a whole jumbo's worth of passengers
I had a 2 hour check in for Hong Kong at Christmas.
It was a 10 minute checkin going from HK to Macau same for the return and a 3 hour check in going from Hong Kong to Japan.
I wished I had more time in HK and Japans airport though, loved looking at lables I couldnt read and some funny english lables.

Air France in Manchester and HK were fantastic, Air France in Paris were just plain rude. Cathay Pacific - outstanding.

Whilst 3 hours may seem a long time at Heathrow it can take all of that! Don;t forget tomorrow is likely to be busy as people continue to fly for the Easter break.
As has been said the big problem at Heathrow is the security where I have queued for hours. More recently found the solution is a 6 month old baby, which means going straight to the front!
Not sure you have time to produce one by tomorrow though!

I agree.. its not the check in itself that will take time, its the useless security line you have to wait at that will eat up time. So not the airline at fault, but the airport authorities with the looooong queues and only half the metal detectors open with no staff to do the job. So maybe the airlines are tired of having to wait and get last passengers rushed to the airplane due to UK airports ineptitude.
