Essentially for simpo-two but others may be interested.
Just discovered that in my D2X pack is a new piece of software called Nikon Picture Project which supersedes Nikon View. I think this will solve your problem downloading direct from camera

Howdy Thanks for thinking of me!
I have Picture Project but didn't use it as I tend to avoid camera-maker's software and just dismissed it as a Mickey Mouse library thingy.

However, I found out that it might have camera drivers on it as well (Nikon don't say that of course) - but unfortunately it doesn't include the relevant bit for a D70. Genius, thanks Nikon
