Lack of originality in Hollywood.

There I was walking along minding my own business and then I saw a poster 'Miss Congeniality 2'-WTF

Ok the first one was a reasonable pleasant way of spending 2 hours (particularly with Sandra Bullock in it)

but did anyone watch the first and think-what this needs is a sequel.

The Telegraph reviewed in on Fiday and said it was absolutely diabolical.(surprise, surprise)-Is it just me or is Hollywood a bit lacking in orginality and inspiration these days.

Hollywood is after safe, easy money. Sequels have a garunteed fan base who will see the film no matter what they hear about it.

You think that's unoriginal what about the flock of new and 'cool' oriental films like Crouching Tiger etc. These are just rehashes in plot and style of pretty much all the movies already made in Hong Kong and China. Funny whay a bigger budget and a bit of marketing can do.

At least they were something new and different a few years back-what the hell is the point of a sequel to a chick flick?

Legally Blonde 2
Bridget Jones 2
and Miss Cong 2

What do these movies all have in common apart from the fact they are sequels.

You mean that the studios are more interested in making money than producing good, original movies??

I suppose they were 'new' to a different audience, but the new ones are just Hollywoodised flashier, bigger effects versions of the typical HK movies of old.

If the west wants easy money just buy up the old back catalogue and chuck on some subtitles instead of making stuff like House of Flying Daggers.

Writing a sequel is easy. The characters are all done. You could even use the same plot and locations just make everybody look a bit older.

Easy money quick to do.

At the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD, there is a trailer for another one in production and one in pre-production(whatever that means - ask George Carlin)

mind you, I will be watching that as Keira Knightly makes me go all unnecessary.

Well as far as originality & Hollywood go there isnt any

We have a massive crop of remakes on the horizon I'm afraid..

Add to that the lot that have just done the rounds at the cinema...

Looks like Hollywood is fresh out of ideas
And we're the ones losing out

As for the ring 2 there were three books, They are just continuing the story. Neither japanese nor american versions followed the book although I have it on good authority the book read like stereo instructions and the japanese film was a vast improvement. Japan had 2 versions of ring 2: Razen (spiral), one by the same production company and one a knock off that was completed during the height of the first film's popularity. There is also Ring 3: Basudai (birthday) which was set before my namesake's death

BTW why has it taken so many posts before someone mentions the remake of the italian job?

I thought I read that it was offered to Miss Bollox's production company before Clint was in the picture.

I can't think it would have worked as well with her in charge since she only seems to take roles that have her sending herself up.

How can you say that? Have you not seen Grease 2, or Rocky 5, or Rambo 3?

Go watch Cypher, came out in 2002, not many people seen or heard of. Very original and clever.

There have been some good sequels but they tend to be in areas where the original movie was innovative.

Thus Aliens 2 and Terminator 2 were both really great movies.

Also you have the situation where the story was always planned to be in multiple parts-ie films like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

But seriously how can you have a sequel to a chick flick-girl finds out about herself, finds boy of her dreams, they get to together, and then presumably live happily ever after-what is the sequel going to be about?-changing the baby's nappies.


Oh and I take your point on point LA-it must be very hard to come up with an innovative script and then get it into production.

Oops sorry Stebbe I have just re-read what I was quoting-you are saying that Hollywood has been like this for some time?-you are probable right.
