MODS - I understand that this is probably more relevant in the computers / gadgets section, but it's more likely to get a better reception from the knowledgeable folk in here instead!

Anyways,

I have a PS4 500GB Fatty (ie. not slim, geddit?) and I've reached HDD capacity. It didn't take much of a thought process to delete COD Black Ops 3 from the drive to free some space, but I've just had to un-install Uncharted 4 and I'm at my limit.

I know Sony have announced external HDD support and there is a Beta test ongoing, but does anyone know when this will land?

I've also done my research into replacing the HDD inside the PS4. Seagate Expansion 2TB portable HDD is the product to buy, just un-box and swap the boards (leaving you with a handy 500gb portable drive in the process). However, best price on these is still £80ish (were £45 on promotion ~ 2 months ago). Should have bought one at the time, but is there a similarly cost-effective solution I haven't come across?

Main reason of asking is that someday, in a probably distant future, Gran Turismo Sport will be released. I'm guessing this is going to be pretty disc-space heavy if previous iterations are anything to go by.

Or with the advent of the PS4 Pro, would I be better to trade in (PS4 fatty trade-in value = £105) and buy one of these later in the year? Appreciate the trade in value is only going in one direction however.

Appreciate any help!

Interested in this also, as my Nephew is bending my ear about sorting his PS4 for him.

That's it -

500GB sounds like a lot but I'm struggling with space with around 10 games.

Some games take a laughable amount of space up, it is a joke.

Regarding changing to a PS4 Pro, unless you have a 4K TV, not worth it IMO.

If your existing PS4 bucks the kicket then fine, upgrade, but I won't be upgrading anytime soon.

Aye I'm in the same thought process now, the premium (for Pro) is just too great to justify at the moment. Unless I go all out and get a curved 4K monitor too. I could dip into the wedding money? Saves me in the long run...

I think I'll bite the bullet at £69.99 for an external Seagate 2GB HDD, that way I can swap the old 500gb unit into the cradle and pacify the Mrs with an extensive porn movie collection we can plug straight into the TV.

Funnily enough I did this at the weekend. I fitted a Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD as I wanted to do it once and done.

No issues whatsoever with physically changing the drive itself. Literally took a few minutes as don't have really thought it through well. In clip the top cover, one screw, extract the drive caddy, 4 screws to remove the drive. Reverse the process with the new one.

The software was a complete fking knightmare.

For some reason windows 10 was downloading a corrupted file every single time (tried 3 different browsers and 4 different download accelerators). No matter what I did the PS4 said the firmware file was corrupted and it would reject the install. Apparently it's to do with windows not liking the .PUP file format and failing on the CRC check, and actually corrupting the file itself during download (best I can find from google).

Finally knocked my next door neighbours door as he has nothing but apple products. Downloaded the file on his Mac, tried it in the PS4, worked instantly!!

Now I'm not the only person this has happened too and others have had exactly the same issues. Others however have had no problems, it seems to be a completely random event that sony won't even acknowledge. I would say if you have a mac then I guess you will have no problems, but it's worth finding someone prepared to help out just in case.

Edited to add:- the new drive is much quieter than the original drive and there is slight (but noticeable) improvement in loading times. Nice side effect of the extra storage and in part due to selecting a hybrid drive.

The 1TB SSHD is £70 so you can chose - prices are generally on a downward trend but these are laptop parts so will always be a little higher.

One point to add, that you may not care about as it may not ever matter to you..

I went to trade my Ps4 in for my Ps4 Pro at launch day at GAME.

They noticed I had removed one of the "warranty void" stickers over the screws on the case and had quite a moment regarding not taking in PS4 that had been opened.

I hadn't actually opened it, I had just taken off the sticker to see what type of screws held it together as I was considering trying to blow the dust out of it. Just wanted to make sure you knew that come trade in/up time, it can be a hassle.

Cheers

Terms and conditions on Sony's website state clearly that changing the internal HDD does NOT void the warranty on a PS4 console (although obviously they won't cover your new HDD).

That is interesting. I assume you need to remove those tabs and screws that I had a look at on the chassis/case of the ps4? I presume they must just not say warranty void on them?

My device was out of warranty anyway and I assume GAME can have their own policies of what they are willing to accept? Therefore the point may still stand?

All done, what a piece of cake that was.

And now I have a 500gb portable hard drive too!

Now just lots and lots of downloading to do...

Yeah, it's a game of two halves.

The physical swap is a doddle. I used a Seagate 2TB portable drive off of Amazon as widely recommended.

The software, accounts and re-downloading was a bit of a pain but probably only took a week or so to get most things singing along properly. I do keep finding the odd thing that needs to be reset or reinstalled, like the Star Wars Battlefront expansions which I realised at the weekend hadn't set themselves up correctly on reinstallation of the main game.

The original drive is now stuck to the back of my living room TV with velcro, performing DVR duties. Happy days.

There's a firmware update due 'any day now' that will let you add an external USB3 drive and move/ install games onto it (you could always attach USB drives but up 'til now only use them for media).

This means that you could swap something like a fast 2.5" SSD into your PS4 and with the old HDD you swapped out, put it in a USB3 caddy. The SSD wouldn't be such huge capacity (unless you wanted to pay megabucks) but it would probably be enough to hold your most played games and overall you have extended your total game install capacity.

I got the Seagate 2TB Firecuda a few months back. It's a decent drive but quite pricey and with the ability to use external drives coming to the PS4 soon, I think that SSD+external HDD would be the way to go for anyone doing a drive replacement in the future.

Removal of the drive is different based on what version PS4 you have. The fact that you are out of warranty tells me you have the original design, in which case you don't touch any external screws at all. The top glossy cover slides off and the drive caddy is underneath there in an easy to reach place. The entire thing is specifically designed for ease of upgrade.

Slide off the top cover....

1 screw and the caddy slides out...

It's all on the sony playstation website and really is very simple to do.

I know there is an update coming that enables USB drive support but the issue I have is that with PSVR you only have one free USB slot on the console (VR uses the other one). So if you also have a USB steering wheel... you cannot plug in another HDD frown

I will use an external drive, but only for non racing games I guess, which means that an internal upgrade is still a valid option for quite a few of us.

Hi - that is a cool explanation thanks and very helpful. It aligns with Sony saying that replacing the HDD doesn't impact warranty. The fact no screws or "anti tamper" stickers are removed too is a good design.

I "had" an original ps4 and now I have a PS4 Pro. Nearly came a cropper when trading in so wanted to share that lesson with others :-)..but now I appreciate not relevant in this situation!

The new update will let you use external hard drives for system storage. Might save some hassle if anyone else was planning to swap a new drive in.

Yep, just spotted this in the latest update too. A 2TB external drive is about 65 quid on Amazon right now so not too expensive an upgrade.

I must admit, I thought about just running an external HDD after the update, but didn't fancy not having the two USB slots free on the front of the console. I typically have my G29 wheel and a Dualshock controller plugged in there, so it would have been a faff.

Plus, this swap was so easy and it has left me with a 500gb portable hard drive which is nice. I think I paid £69.99 for the Seagate 2TB.
