Engine and box dont seem to give trouble, the suspension is the clincher though,

I think you can be lucky but it is a complex 15 year old car, rust wise they dont seem as bad as other mercs of the era, think the body was aluminium and plastic but they do still have issues.
I think I would be finding a few and making cheeky bids on those with money spent, buyers market, I tried selling my 2008 CLS for seven and got little interest, so be careful, know they arent the same car but I wouldnt be paying more than about three grand on a CL500, unless totally original, pristine, with loads of bills, lots of blinged up heaps out there.

Fine thing for the money, and it has airmatic which can still be expensive, but not wallet buggeringly, toe curlingly, third mortgage type expensive, just f
k me that is expensive type expense, also with ABC you dont, like with Airmatic have the option to cut your losses and convert it to coilovers/conventional suspension, the CL never had any sold on such a setup and doesnt have an Anti Roll Bar,the ABC stuff controls the roll, thats why it is so good, until it breaks...

I has a similar vintage CL500, about five years ago, and found it to be an utterly superb car. I was lucky to never have any suspension issues, however it is something you live in fear of as an owner.
in fact I hardly had any issue with it at all (just cam sensor) and apart from doing around 21MPG combined and a free-falling resale value (which you will have avoided) it was a blast. Effortless power and superb handling for such a big car.

Agree with the above, if you car is ABC problem free then they are a superb car to own. They do really handle very well, surprisingly so for its size. The rear seats are very usable for two grown people, and the engine is a sweet gem. They do go through rear tyres quite quickly mind.

I won't go into my 3rd year of ownership and my ABC problems on this thread because it's detailed in a thread further down the page. However I will say that the cost I spent to try and fix the problem, far exceeded the running cost of my f355 for the last two years. That Italian model is universally agreed to be one of the most expensive models to service and run. I just could not stomach that kind spending on the CL any more and cut my losses, which was quite a bit.
