Which lens with D70
Discussion
No technical reason for me to reccomend the 18 - 70 other than you need the short end (18mm) to help compensate for the x1.5 lengthening effect the D70 has!
I've got a 35 - 80 and never use it! I just can't get far enough back for some shots. I also have a 80 - 200 which is great because at the other end of the scale it acts as a 300mm lens.

Got a D70 with the 18-70 last week, and the kit is very impressive for the deal with £100 cash back.
You definately need the 18mm because of the mag factor mentioned above.
BUT not sure about the quality of the lens???
It gets great reviews, but my older 35-70 f2.8 appears to knock spots off it optically.
I need to do a bit more testing to prove.

Oh yes.. forgot to mention
Perfect compatibility with my older lenses.
I have an older 80-200 f2.8 which is outstanding
Now effectively a 300 f2.8, bloody marvelous...
Not compatible with my SB24 speedlight, oh well can't have everything
Regards
Sounds like you have the same 80-200F2.8 as me? Heavy as a breeze block but fantastic to have F2.8 at 300mm.

But can a more technically able PHer explain WHY the 18-70 is the better lens?
Four reasons:
1) 18mm is extremely useful (and expensive to organise later when you realise 28mm isn't enough).
2) AF-S: Silent wave focusing - very fast and quiet.
3) IF: Internal focusing - so your filters don't rotate as you focus
4) ED: Extra Dispersion glass
Another vote for the 18-70, I made the mistake of buying the D70 with a 28-80 because I wanted the camera for my holidays and couldn’t get the 18-70 in time… the 28-80 was on the camera a few months until I could buy an 18-70… get the 18-70 first off and save some cash you won’t want to be without it.
