How to remove center wheel caps

I just bought new tires, but the shop couldn't get the center caps off (they wanted me to give the okay to break them) to balance them. They just push out from the inside, right? Or is there some other trick to it?

They push out from the outside of the wheel INWARDS.
They are trying to push them the wrong way...
