Twin external Mics for exhaust and Turbo flutter!?
Discussion
Hi all
Iv been playing around with my Canon 700D recently taking some incar video of my skyline I'd like to capture the exhaust and turbo flutter and have been told that a twin mic setup is the way to go one in the number plate recess and one under the bonnet near the air cone.
Question is
A what's a decent cheapish couple of mics to use??
And how do I link 2x mics to to my Canon? Plug them both into a splitter????
Thanks in advance guys

When I made this video ( link), I used a GoPro and two mono lapel mics with a 2 x mono -> 1 x stereo adaptor.
Also, a quick google for "Canon 700D external mic" brings me to a PH thread as the top result -> http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Thanks clockwork I'll have a google of the mono - stereo adaptor!! What Model mics did you use??
They were just cheap unpowered lapel mics I bought on eBay for a few quid for six. I bought them years ago so I'm afraid that I can't give you any more info than that. The mono to stereo adaptors are readily available from eBay, Amazon, Maplin, wherever. They're not expensive and neither were the mics, so for under a tenner you could have something to play with and throw away if it's no good.

And cool vid mate sounds like a war zone in that tunnel
LOL. Thanks.

I would want them separate if possible and going into a laptop or iPad for later mixing and balancing, or editing if required.
You should be fine to just whack them straight into the camera but if you wanted to do more with the sound, you could use eg Audacity or something to sort the audio out and then something like Movie Maker to mix video and audio.
There are cleverer and more expensive ways of doing it, but separating out the audio to the video and then putting it back together later would probably give a better end result.

Thanks for the input andy
so yea I bought 2x lapel mics 2x mini rode dead cas 2x extension leads and a splitter plugged straight into the Camera and worked as I hoped
Now my exhaust is way too load and distorts te sound so had to move it right up to the back off the boot!! Is this becomes the mic is cheap or can I adjust the sensitivity if I use a separate audio recorder??
Also with where Iv had to put the rear mic the one under the bonnet for turbo flutter totally overpoweres the exhaust sound with turbo flutter but is nice and clear is it just a case of moving them around until I get them right or should I look at a separate audio recorder so I can control the levels??
Cheers John

Too much input gain and unbalanced. The thing is though, if you have the perfect balance of sound and noise dropped in over a video, it will sound fake because what your ear normally hears is a bit muffled and distant, you're sat in an insulated cabin with stuff going on infront and behind you. Not saying to make the audio s
t, but consider what you're used to hearing and just aim for a slightly better version of thatAnd also, put the mics into a separate mixer first or lower your input gain a lot.
