Steering Problems -A6 Avant. 2L tdi 57 plate Semi Automatic
Discussion
Can anybody help please?
I`ve got a 57 plate 2.0 tdi A6 avant with 190,000 miles.
It`s been well looked after, and other than the odd electrical gremlin, it all seems fine.
Until recently! It now has a knocing, juddering sound when steering on idle mainly.
It`s a semi automatic `box and as such, creeps when in gear, making slow speed movements (manouvering in car parks etc) a very noisy experience - something akin to a 1980`s transit!
When on idle, if you turn the steering wheel a little (just off centre, taking the strain) the sound starts. It sounds almost "plasticky" and not metallic. It also does it on full lock.
You can re-create the sound every time, either just off centre, or on full lock and it seems affected by the engine speed too.
I`ve had the power steering belt and tensioner replaced, but it`s still the same.
It`s really annoying as it sounds so loud, and the car drives, stops and goes well, other than this.
My mechanic guy says that it`s down to the idle speed, as when it`s revving anything over idle speed, it seems to be a lot quiter, but he can`t adjust the idle speed.
Can anyone help please?
