Im trying to play 4k video files from a thumb drive on an LG 4k oled tv. The files are stuttering and not playing smoothly (File size approx 20gb). Do I need a separate media player , if so can you recommend one ?

I have an LG 4K OLED and have played 4K files from a USB stick - although only stuff like the Chess demo.

I stream my videos from my NAS using Kodi on Amazon Fire and it works well.

ETA : Ignore me - I don't stream 4K, only bluray - not much help to you. For 4K I use a 4K bluray player.

I would expect the codec you video is in could the the issue.

if its a full length movie in 4k, i would expect the file to be closer to 50gb

Could also be the thumb drive, not all drives are created equal when it comes to transfer speed. If the drive cannot deliver the data to the TV fast enough you'll get stutter and dropped frames.

I've played a couple of 4k demo's on my LG 950v, played OK, and the demos in shop's certainly will be playing off a USB stick. Try geting a Lexar S73 drive and plugging it into the blue (USB 3.0) socket on your TV and it should be fine. Of course it's easy to enocde a file that won't play back, even if everything is correct, if you set the bitrate too high or whatever.
