I was in London today and decided to go and see what this IQOS from Philip Morris was all about..

Bought a unit and a few packs of Heets to try...

Very pleasantly surprised... it smokes just like a cigarette ... no tobacco smell... no smoke.. smells a bit like toast

kind of chars the tobacco...

Probably wouldn't get away with it on the plane.. very different experience to E-Cigs or vaping..

Anyone else tried these?

Just give up for goodness sake, they're still going to kill you.

Just yesterday in the paper it was saying that more people gave up in 2015 than ever before and that the lowest percentage of people smoke - now just 17.2%. Once the 2016 figures are available it will have doubtless dropped again.

I already think that most people find it a revolting habit and socially irresponsible (no matter what clever little devices they invent to keep you on the hook). I wonder how long it will be before society finds it as unacceptable as say drink driving?

You might as well just buy a ecig?

If your concerned about the smell of smoking, why not? Healthy and cheaper too?

The problem really is that subject to an age limit, it's perfectly legal to buy/smoke cigarettes, whereas driving over a certain limit badly impairs your judgement and ability. They're very different things and rightly are treated differently by law.

With the fake fags, I say just carry on with the real ones. I'm not a fan of vaping or e-cigs or whatever you want to call them. Not because they're not real, I just think there's a danger to them that hasnt really come to light yet. At least smoking Marlboros there's a long history of exactly what could happen to reflect on while I light up another.

Never. Given somebody smoking in their own home poses approximately 0% of the risk to me that a drunk driver does.

EFA - he could get hit by a bus, or even possibly be one of those who smoke well into the 90's and dies of something utterly unrelated - although we all know that even if a 97 year old smoker dies of a stroke it will be put in the figures as a smoking related death to further skew things.

IMO it is already viewed by some as being socially unacceptable. But then again last night I was treated to a mirror full of full beam and horn chorus by a motorist who seemed to think it socially unacceptable for me to overtake them whilst they were doing 40 on an NSL dead straight road (old Railway line). There will always be a group of people who are determined that they know best and should be final arbiters of how others live their life and they should all treated with the same utter contempt.

Then again there are some people who will pull off utterly stupid overtakes and some who will not ensure that they are down wind of non smokers they are talking to or who block doorways (but then again they would never have been blocking the doorways if smokers rooms had been allowed in the UK...

Those figures are probably due to the amount of people giving up smoking and switching to vaping.

That's lovely. Now what about the response to the question asked?

Saw this a while back and heard several users comment that they 'smoked' many more heets than they ever had real cigs

That's pretty normal, especially with people switching to vaping. You light a cig, smoke it and have a break between the next one. With this and vaping there is no start (lighting) and stopping (extinguishing) cycle. Its ready to go all the time, it takes a little adjustment to use it and pause between the next time you use it.

I could not disagree more.

Vape liquid is very simple to make, with very few ingredients.

The base is Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), or a combination of both. To this, nicotine is added, and flavourings if desired.

There is absolutely no reason that you cannot vape 100% VG + nicotine.

VG information said:
Every day you probably use some form of glycerin or glycerol. This clear, odorless liquid is sweet tasting and has a consistency of syrup. It readily dissolves in water and is a good solvent. Vegetable glycerin is derived from extracted glycerol fats from plant oils such as palm and coconut. It is commonly used as a base for pharmaceuticals and other household items. Glycerin can capture moisture from the air, making it a good addition to moisturizers. It has a relatively short shelf life and should be stored in a cool, dark place
PG information said:
The form most pertinent to this article is the pharmaceutical grade. This is a much less concentrated form of PG and therefore less problematic. That being stated, it is also the controversial form due to its use in products that are either ingested or enter the body through application to the skin. It is commonly used as a solvent in oral, topical and injectable drug products as well as in foods.

Though the controversy over PG wages on, it is not for lack of research. In fact many studies have been conducted, but results have been contradictory. Possibly this is because the concentration of PG in the formulation studied is not always readily apparent. Regardless, the government agencies involved have deemed it safe: The FDA includes Pharmaceutical grade PG on its Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list. The World Health Organization also considers it as safe for use.
The known risks of chemicals in conventional cigarettes are massively higher than VG/PG. You're exposing yourself to chemicals that we know are very dangerous, based on an unfounded gut feeling. It seems that the chances of us discovering that VG/PG is more dangerous that these chemicals are minute at best.

Sorry Cotty... the Iqos isn't like that... it isn't continuous... one finishes it and disposes of the used heated stick... Its arguably harder to 'light' up a follow on Heet stick until the unit has reheated.

Given PMI's track record in engineering ever more deadly concoctions of tobacco treatments to make their product deadlier and more addictive than 50 years ago I don't think they can be at all trusted to have done anything to make these safer. They seem to completely defeat the point if vaping and are cynically locking users into buying a bit if kit that continues to feed them money by forcing you to buy packs of 20 as you did before. Looks more like a cynical ploy to prop up their dying business model than any genuine attempt at harm reduction. They've been lobbying hard to get 'open platform' vape systems stopped because 'people can add things into the juice', coming from the company that puts urea in cigarettes....

The vaping business threatens their whole model - the cottage industry of gourmet juice companies isn't a profitable model for them as they can't mass produce hundreds of gourmet flavours. Their ceo actually said consumers found vaping unsatisfying and wanted a cigarette experience - er, no. the cigalike experience is unsatisflying because their products are rubbish, but i dont know anyone who quit and vapes with mods who wants a 'cigarette experience' - thats why they all quit.

if you are still smoking these might be interesting, but the articles suggesting these will kill the vaping market are nonsense - its like saying a new type of vodka is going to kill wine tasting.

No, I was aware of them but part of the reason I gave up smoking was the 10.50 a pack of 20 cost and the fact the EU are banning menthols including my favourite ice blast fags so decided to give vaping ago - haven't smoked a single cigarette since and find vaping much more satisfying than smoking - i never liked the tobacco taste.

What puts me off these - fir the cist of the heating gadget (thanks to the pending tpd ban stock clearance) i got a top of the range mod and tank that deliverd the sort of nicotine hit even with 3mg juice that i haven;t had since my B&H days, 30mg of quality juice can be had for 4.99 and less and lasts ages - I've gone from a 50 quid a week spend to about 4.

With these you will still be spending 8 quid a pack of 20 and limited to std tobacco and menthol (which isn't a patch on vaping vampire heisenberg for taste), and the reviews said there us a design flaw where the fag gets tuck in your mouth spilling all the black crud from the device all over you. its still messy - you have to clean all rhe black soot out the device and you still have the spent cigarette to chuck in an ashtray - so conpared to vaping i think they are an uncomfortable compromise. They also only come in 12 and 18 mg strength. I started vaping 12mg, in 3 days i was down to 6mg, and since i got a sub ohm i dropped to 3 which delivers a bigger hit than the rubbish 12mg cigalike i started with.

I'm not an anti-smoking zealot - i loved smoking my ice blasts (a taste i picked up in korea), and if these work for people then great, i hope they enjoy them. I do find the anti-vape lobbying to be out of order - PMI trying yo restrict my choice and freedom to vape in order to monopolise me into using their sub-standard products is not cricket. I'm not trying to get people to quit smoking marlboros so they should leave vapers alone - if they want my business then develop a decent ice blast ejuice. All said and done we're all nicotine addicts and enjoy our vice, the more choices we have about how to get our fix the better - there isnt a one size fits all - I just think this product doesn't hit the mark - according to a reviewer you've got to keep charging the thing by usb between hits AND still shet out 8 notes a box - thats the worse of both worlds - my mod uses regular replaceable recharging batteries so i can swap out between charges (which last most of the day), waiting to recharge would drive me up the wall. And as I said, there is no independent research on what PMI put into the tobacco - and they are known for engineering their products with some nasty things. You can argue we don't know the long term effects of vaping but we do know what the product is made of - when PMI offer that kind of transparancy their harm reduction claim might stand up, my suspicion is however that spending 3 billion designing these things they are designed to be a cashcow for PMI not improve smokers health. I am watching with interest, but. I think they are likely to be the equivelent of a blu-ray to vaping's online streaming - the thing they hate about the vape industry is you can get any mod, any tank, any juice from 0 to 20mg in every flavour - have little vapour to huge clouds - its a very customisable experience, these things like blu ray lock you into their platform and their product offer - a more apt analogy is they are like microsoft trying to sell a box license against the world of open source vaping. Having tried their cigalike products which are just rubbish compared to a custom vape mod, I don't really expect this product to be 'that' much better than the vaping experience to get people to switch back.

And i can't help think it looks like one of those pregnancy test kits women pee on, so I'll be sticking to my box mod for my nicotine addiction ;p
