I've just been informed that I should never ever ever get a secret live TV camera in the house for a Saturday night TV show.

I asked if I would be in more or less trouble for buying James May's Corniche at auction.

Apparently the Corniche is less trouble.

Result!

Buying classic cars on a whim has always been positioned as table stakes for our marriage. Anything involving surprise contact with chirpy Geordies would definitely be less well received

I dont know what an ant and ec camera in the living room is but it sounds like something that would send the mrs into orbit.

A classic car suprise would probably make her slightly miffed she hadnt been consulted then decide it was pretty cool.

There's an option missing for me.

Both would result in instant death.
Fair to say she's not one for surprises.

My interpretation is that I can go to the Bonhams auction next weekend at Goodwood, buy James May's Corniche, and not be in the doghouse as long as there's no Geordie invasion in the sitting room? Sound ok?

I occasionally buy frivolous yet entertaining motor vehicles, and other items, without asking the other half.

She usually just asks what it is, has a little look and comments on whether she likes the look of it or not.

Generally I buy stuff that is keenly priced and end up making a profit on it or at least getting my money back, especially where classic, sports or hot hatch cars are concerned.

If I was just wasting our money constantly or being silly then clearly she would have an issue, and rightly so.

I made £41k on one car right down to making £1500-2000 here and there on silly hot hatches that I bought.

If I pranked her on national TV or anything like that she would be incandescent.

For my ex the car wouldn't have been a big surprise and after the argument about money she'd enjoy it as much as me. Worst case it can be sold.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to arrange Ant & Dec to broadcast her live on TV wearing a onesie and farting loudly.

I have turned up with too many cars out of the blue over the years. My excitement at having got a 200SX cheap because it was automatic and having already found a manual box to do a conversion was not shared by my wife. Like pretty much everyone else though, Ant and Dec would be far less popular, anything to avoid making a scene/embarrassment. Which is why I always wear the free sombrero in Chiquitos biggrin
Ask me if I'd rather she turned up with an expensive handbag, or invite Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman in the studio and I might have to offer my seat up to Miss Daly.

There's a diving equipment shop I regularly visit on a small trading estate. One day, I drove in and noticed a brand new Elise outside one of the units a couple of doors down. When I went inside, one of the staff asked me if I had seen it (knowing I had an Elise too). He was laughing as he told me the owner is in the dog-house as he bought it without discussing it with the wife.

When I visited a few weeks later, it was parked outside the unit again. As I was leaving, I saw a few blokes stood around it, so I went over to chat with the owner. If spending £40,000 on a sports car without spousal approval wasn't bad enough, he told me she had actually sent him out to look for a Ford S-Max.

having recently purchased our first house to have OSP for at least 4 cars and a detached garage i have started looking at something interesting to sit in there. Was feeling an old london taxi with 500k miles for about a grand, just for taking the dogs over the park etc.

she saw me looking at auto trader yesterday and expressed her 'unhappiness' about the prospect of an old tatty black cab appearing on our driveway.

i think it'd still be less pain than the cheeky chappies spying on our living room though.

i'll let you know how that goes laugh

The sudden appearance of a 928 in the garage caused no consternation, so I'd go with what I know would work...

I think my relationship would be in trouble if I put Ant and Dec on, let alone surprised her with hidden cameras!

The car thing would be okay though.

The Ant and Dec thing, because it's "common" having checked with her what it is.

Didn't Chris Evans get caught by a BBC hidden camera show having some relaxation time in his living room a few years back, lol.
