I think I'm finally ready to buy some car ramps after being very lucky (stupid) of just using jack+ some wooden blocks as insurance when doing something on cars. I don't really trust jack stands either.

Maybe someone has done research before or can suggest something decent that's not overly expensive?
I think the best/safest ones would be created by myself from some timber, but timber is expensive here...so might as well buy something ready-made.

for example These https://www.amazon.co.uk/Heavy-Metal-Tonne-2500kg-...

Super Heavy Duty Metal 2.5 Tonne ramps on amazon looks like crap with very bad design so was looking for something better(safer).

So you dont trust jack stands, and the ramps on Amazon look 'crap'.

But you were perfectly happy to work under your car using a jack and a couple of bits of timber...

The ramps on Amazon are fine for what they are intended for.

Ramps can be a bit limiting when doing work on suspension, and can be a pain to drive onto.

I use one of these: https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/ctj3000g-3-tonne-p... along with some 2-foot lengths of hardwood railway sleepers. I do also have some 12-tonne axle stands, but don't like using them on my scabby tarmac.

Have a look at them yourself in that amazon link and see if you can spot why they look crap and not safe.. smile
( too short/hardly any area for wheel/ and look at that tiny support metal welded in for ''support'' biggrin)

I'm not saying I was fine, however with large timber blocks you get some kind of insurance, and I would put some extra timber blocks even with ramps.

when you want to work on wheels/brakes I think it's fine by just lifting one side up anyway so don't even need anything special for that as you are not going under the car anyway?

Many non-suspension jobs require one or more wheels removing (clutch work, timing belts etc), so again ramps aren't much cop. I do have a pair of ramps bought many years ago, but I just don't use them!

I've some similar to this, from my local recycling centre.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/car-ramps-/302243103740?...

Solid enough for a 2 tonne car, stable as long as the ground's level. The only draw back is you need a couple of bits of wood, to lead in if your cars low.

I got some offcuts of 10"x3" roof timbers off a local builder for free, worth asking if you drive past a building site smile

3 layers cut at an angle, glued and screwed together, wide enough for a 265/35 profile tyre to sit on happily.

Axle stands?

Cheap, and safer than any bit of wood, as long as they are PUWER marked and used correctly.
