Stands and trolley Jack
Discussion
depends what you want to do... for routine maintenance then a couple of little stands will be fine - i had 2 wee ones and 2 big ones, lent the wee ones to somebody and it's now pretty clear I won't be getting them back. I don't use the big ones on the S because they're just too big and awkward
PLUS you need a trolley jack that's small enough to fit under the chassis, yet with enough lift to get stands under - and unless you pay a lot, you either get low jack low lift, or high lift but doesn't fit under. Big stands don't help in this bit of the equation!

I want the stands for routine maintenance. I am getting frustrated that I cannot easily get underneath the car. I had not considered that I might not be able to get the jack under the car. I suppose that this is compounded by the fact that the most convenient surface is a gravel drive.
Pies - they're not MY old Halfords stands are they? Who did I lend them to?
My Halfords trolley jack cost £30 or something 10 years ago, and has paid for itself. It fits under the chassis from the front - just.
Oh! Cover the jack head in something so you don't damage the chassis coating - I used a small bit of carpet and half a roll of gaffa tape.

Place the on the main chassis members
as below
I definitely wouldn't do the former. The idea of the cup in the stand is to stop thing sliding about and sticking a big bit of wood in it will allow the car to move. I found this out when mine fell off such an axle stand, happily I wasn't under it and the stand didn't hit anything as the car came down. The rubber in the second picture is by far the more sensible.
