He has a good point.
Too wide tyres will catch on the back of the headlights access panel on full lock.
Ditto too big a diameter.
I have some R1R Toyos on 17 inch rims, 225/45 17, on my car..
They catch.
They are equivalent to 225/50 16.
But R1Rs are wider tyres than some, squarer-shouldered.
So. What tyres are you planning?

Per this handy guide:

Minimum tyre width for an 8 inch wheel is 215, max is 245, ideal is in between.
Wheel diameters:
205/55 15 = 606mm
225/45 16 = 608.5mm
225/45 17 = 632mm.....which (just) catches
225/50 16 = 631mm.....might catch, might not
If you can get them:
215/50 16 = 621mm
215/45 16 = 600mm
If you are not planning on changing your rear tyres, then look at 225/45 16 or 215/45 16 to stay as near as you can to the original diameter and hence keep the rake front to rear similar (about 25mm).

ET25 is the correct offset for the Chimaera fronts
ET33 is the correct rear offset, ie 8mm further into the wheelarch.
I am surprised that Escort Cosworth wheels are ET25 TBH. I thought all Ford wheels 4 stud were either ET38 or ET40. Just shows I don't know as much as I thought.
I am assuming you have looked at the back of the wheels and they have ET25 stamped on them?
So, you have a full set with tyres on, 225/45 16.
Right - stick them on the car. Don't worry about the rake for now (I have run a set of 215/45 17s all round on the last 6 track days with no problems), but see how they work.
Firstly, stationery, they won't catch. But check how close the outside edge of the rear tyres are to the wheel arch, or will be under maximum suspension compression. My bet is probably just ok, as I have run rear 235 R888 track tyres, but ET33, on my car without an issue.
Then take it for a drive, especially around tight corners and junctions. If they are going to catch, they will most likely do so on full lock. You will most certainly hear it if they do.
If all is well, see if your TVR guy can raise your rear ride height by 12mm to compensate. Your alternative is to go for 245/45 16 rears, but with ET25 wheels there is a serious risk of them catching on the outer wheel arches.

All escort cossie wheels are et25.
If you fit these on the front don't use a tyre wider than 215. They will have a bit of stretch but nothing dangerous. Profile wise a 40 or 45 or a narrower 205 50 16. These wheels fit on Ford mk5 fiestas and streetka's with 195 45 tyres.
On the rear you are good for 245 45 16 tyres but the offset is pushing the wheel an extra 10mm out so to keep wheel arch clearance a 225 50 16 or 235 40 16 would be best. If you fit track type tyres go a size smaller as mentioned before

Unfortunately a lot of ebay sellers over describe the items they sell! I hope you find a set soon.
I agree with you about the wheels and think they will suit a Chimaera. Keeep us posted as I am curious how an et 25 rear wheel will work, especially if you fit 245/45x16 tyres.
Regards Chris.

What is the overall view for correct tyres on 15" front and 16" rears in Toyos or Estorillshandy guide link

"Correct" tyre sizes varied on the model year and availability of tyres at the factory.
Originally designed to run on 225/55x16 rears and 205/60x15 fronts, the majority of cars now seem to run 205/55x15 fronts and 225/50x16 rears. The other option commonly seen on PAS cars is 225/50x15 fronts and 245/45x16 rears. To confuse things even further, the very last Chims had 16" all round with 225/45x16 on the front.
Tyre availability in the correct size and speed ratings means virtually any combination is possible and many owners have fitted 17" or larger wheels to widen the tyre choice. Personally I think the higher profiles suit the car better, just my view!
