I have given limited time had some outside help in on a website redesign, which in general I'm quite pleased with.

Said designer has complained that he has not given himself credit in my footer. This seems to have been an oversight on his part, but my instinct is that I would have been quick to delete it in any case.

I've suggested that I would be happy to stick a link in my about us page.... Not sure if I'm being too hard - or too soft on this...

Did you pay for his help? If you paid a fair wage, and it wasn't done at some discounted price as a favour then its your call whether you include it in the footer.

If you got the help for free / discounted etc then you should include it, as leaving it out is a dick move; and unless he is a mug you wont get any more help out of him.

I wouldn't include any mention in the about section of your site - thats just weird.

At the end of the day its a small line of text saying "Site design by whojamaflips web design" at the very foot of the page - in small font, so wont exactly detract from the site content.

Now you say that I edited the footer as I wanted Terms and Conditions in there.... I wonder if I deleted something white!

Is it the website in your profile? If so, the web designer has bought a theme (and possibly modified it slightly). They can hardly lay claim that they developed it from scratch and deserve a credit in the footer. Credits like that are a bit of a weird one anyway, I used to do it whenever I built a website but wouldn't dream of doing it anymore. Partly because the website belongs to the customer and partly because if the customer decides to not update the website for years and years it could potentially look bad on me if it starts looking outdated.

You shouldn't give him credit just for the lack of a Favicon! Schoolboy omission in a world of tabbed browsers

I hardly ever add a credit on a client's website any more, except on a rare occasion where by either:
1) The client wants a better price AND I think a credit on their site will drive traffic/leads.
2) I think the project is interesting enough to be associated with/drive leads from and then I offer a discount for adding a credit as well as using the project as a testimonial/use case.

In both instances it is all agreed before the project starts.

If I do a job for the normal rate then I might ask for a credit/link but it's entirely optional on the part of the customer.

I might do a job for a small discount on condition I get a credit/link.

If I do something for free then I ask for a credit/link and get miffed if they don't.

If I forgot to ask at the outset or it's not in writing anywhere then I can hardly complain if there isn't one!

Nothing to say about the designer, but your proof reader needs replacing, fast.

"Nadine Taylor provides the office back-up to David, and has in the past also worked for International Accountancy’s, Solicitors and Property consultants"

Unnecessary capitals and an incorrect spelling of 'accountancies' don't create the best possible impression.

Edited to change 'a' to 'an' boxedin
