Noises people make whilst eating make me angry
Discussion
They also make me feel sick. My stepfather does what I can only describe as "gurns" his food like a camel and and makes a noise as if he has pressed his tongue against his upper mouth. He's probably the worst I know for making noises, and everyone finds it annoying but I think I have a more deep rooted issue. If I can hear someone eating and they are particularly loud I feel angry, sometime violently so. I'm not an angry or violent person. I have to make excuses and leave the room sometimes, it's that bad. If someone is chewing gum near me I cannot deal with it. I've got off public transport early, left cinemas.. it's bad. Restaurants are normally okay because of distracting background noise, and oddly if I'm eating I'm not so bothered. Tell me I'm not suffering alone?
You're suffering from misophonia. And you sound like a level 9 ... http://www.misophonia-uk.org/the-misophonia-activa...

Thanks, although I think I'm more of a level 4. Still annoying and concerning.sparks_E39 said:

That was deliberate, part of your reprogramming. You're a nutter, but you're not that much of a nutter
The good news is you can do things to help yourself. As an aside, the alternative name is 'selective sound sensitivity syndrome', which for someone like me who goes bats
t at the sound of sibilance is just taking the mick. SSSS ffs. My sister has this diagnosed, and funnily enough it's my stepfather she directs her anger at! It's like an uncontrollable rage sometimes, but only towards him for some reason. Being really mature and an older brother, I obviously try to wind her up by eating loudly and with my mouth open, but she never bites (excuse the pun). It can make family occasions a bit of a nightmare, but we deal with it by sitting them opposite ends of the table.
Not sure if she takes anything for it or has any coping strategies but I'll ask her as I'm seeing her tomorrow.

Sounds like she just hates your step father rather than eating noises, maybe daddy issues? Not sure if she takes anything for it or has any coping strategies but I'll ask her as I'm seeing her tomorrow.
It's fairly common OP and nothing to feel ashamed about. I find it pretty repulsive as well. I'm a 4 on the scale
As a side point, I've never understood how people make it into adulthood doing something as regular as eating in a manner that pisses people off without changing their ways. Somebody that I know sounds ad looks like a dog when he eats - munching up and down fast and hard with his mouth wide open, yet he's extremely well educated and holds a pretty high up job in the city. I often wonder how he's got so far in life without realising that it annoys people - he's a really nice guy, so surely he'd have modified his ways if he knew it annoyed people? And how can he not know?!

Young guy sitting opposite me right now winds me up a treat. Stick thin 22yr old. Eats rubbish all day but has no manners. Eats with mouth open. Every slurping noise possible then quite often swills tea round his mouth like mouthwash to give his palette a clean after yet another biscuit. Also picks his nose and eats what he finds.
Its like sitting opposite the Layercake guy...

OP, people will make a noise eating... some loud, not so much from others. So it you're eating crisps, you're not allowed to make a crunching noise?
You need to chill out.
Right....It's not really as simple as "chilling out". I am in general a chilled out person, unfortunately my reaction to the noises are involuntary, and obviously a minor condition that I appear to share with others on here. Of course I understand eating can be noisy, it doesn't make it any easier to bear. It isn't by any stretch ruining my life, but I can't just switch it off.You need to chill out.
