How to deal with cashing in loads of loose change.
Discussion
We have recently moved house and have a big box of loose change, got to be a good £300 there.
Wife's gone to bank to get some bags and she seems to think each bag needs to be filled with the specific number of coins. I.e you've got to count them.....there must be thousands of coins.
I was under the impression you just fill the bags and they weigh them, which I'm hoping as over the course of two nights I've filled a load of bags with 2s 1's 50's etc.
There's a bloody mountain of them

Coinstar, yes. Didn't appreciate it was 10% though. http://www.coinstar.co.uk/CASH-IN/Overview ... with a postcode search.

Some bank have a machine you can tip the coins into and it pays it into your account. If your bank doesn't have one, find a friend who has an account there.
I think the HSBC machines you enter the account number and sort code manually (no card needed) so the person whose account you are paying into doesn't even need to be there.Actual said:
Go to a supermarket and use the self-checkouts. Choose one where you can dump change into a hopper on top and overpay. It will gobble all up your change and pay out in notes and the correct change. No % fee taken. Don't over do it as you will fill up the excess hopper. :-)
A few years ago, I used to grab breakfast at work, which was oddly specific - £2.63 or something. It varied by which sandwich you ordered (by a few pennies) or by what items you picked (e.g. a rasher of bacon was 32p etc). Unsurprisingly I ended up with a s
tton of loose change at the end of a week. I used to just dump it in a jar and reset with notes for the next week.Eventually I ended up with an enormous pile of change, so I used to go to the local Morrisons at 10pm (or another unsociable time) and ask which machines hadn't been refilled with change. These machines just had a trough you poured your coins into, rather than the nowadays-common coin slot. The guys there used to love it when I came in as it used to make their jobs a lot easier as the machine suddenly went from 12% full to 66% full. I never really noticed the £2.50-odd of change a week I'd empty into my jar, but it was rather nice when every month I was able to go in and feel like I was buying a free crate of beer or a couple of guilty pleasure meals.
I bought one of these coin counting jars from ebay for a fiver

Not sure if they will cope with the new pound coin though
