When I was a kid I always loved the "Lamborghini Cheetah" in my Top Trumps set!

As an adult I've admired them as a piece of Automotive extravagance. Whilst down at Sant'Agata seeing my SV being built in 97 I saw a Black German registered LM002 in for a service and I spent nearly as much time drooling over that as my own car.

So now I'm in the market for something different and find myself lusting over various LM's for sale worldwide.

Question is, whilst it's fine to admire from afar, am I mad in considering the purchase of an LM? I have heard one or two horror stories and I'm not sure if I'm letting my heart rule my head!

Has anyone heard any reports from owners?

LM002 ownership is indeed a rarefied environment but one I would contend that is well worth exploring.

I notice an eminent guru for all things classic Lambo has got one in for mid forties which no doubt you will have already seen.

www.lamborghinisport.com/

And dare I say it just the sort of thing to compliment a garage that contains some of their less capacious offerings.

As your already coming at this potential purchase from a Lambo perspective the engine is surely a known commodity therefore I am guessing the thorny subject of the transmission and drivetrain are the ones that could be ringing alarm bells?

I think that some of these ended up with the marine diesel engine and as such could be worth avoiding purely on the scarcity front? Tyres look as though they could be real joy to source as well

None the less an extremely desirable proposition and one worth perusing as fortune tends to favour the brave and one could never confuse one as some sort of badge engineered SUV offering!

Truely the car to go to this years Le Mans in

Guys,

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement - need to give this some serious consideration ...

....Yes think I'll get one! Ideally I wanted a black one like this:

I'm sure there will be a few around - want to be sure I get a good one as I get the impression that certain parts can be a pain to obtain.

Tyres were specially made Pirelli Scorpions I understand and I don't think anything else is available - they aren't going to be cheap. Countach engine and bespoke transmission - lhd only and poor turning circle. Unmatched gawp appeal though and if you do buy one, nothing will upstage you at VW

Yes the tyres are a bespoke fitment and are EXPENSIVE (£800 each I think). The rest does not scare me too much, I'm used to LHD, poor fuel consumption, and pathetic turning circles.

Sorry to ruin the party but £800 per tyre? You must be temporarily deranged to be even considering the LM002?

Yes...probably....could always get one with NEW tyres already on it...that way I'd get a good few thousand miles out of them....(he says desperatley trying to justify/rationalise his impending purchase!)

Clarkson didn't like them in his video... No space inside, clutch really heavy, impractical in London backstreets (if that is an issue).

Mind you, if you're a bodybuilding dwarf, then go for it... can't beat a lambo v12 engine bolted to a sports exhaust (well, the other way around. you know what i mean! )

Good. That means I'm more likely to enjoy it - I put absolutley ZERO credence in what that T@sser has to say!

Seriously though I'm only 5'11" so I'm sure I will fit in, and am used to vehicles with heavy clutches!

I didn't think that the LM002 was developed at all during its lifespan...when was the last one produced?

Actually, the LM002 begat the LM003 with a diesel engine (only 1 produced) and the LM004 (which I've never seen) with the marine petrol V12. Last LM002 was produced in 1992, so I doubt that the car was ever fitted with the Diablo engine. BTW the brakes are pitiful too and it wanders at speed (top speed) 125 mph!

If you're going to buy one get one from Germany as they have the biggest used supply. Check out www.mobile.de for prices.

Christopher Jackson have one for sale in the UK - they originally wanted £70k (LOL!) for it but have dropped i £30k since then. I wouldn't pay more than £35-40k for one.

Cheers guys,

In speaking to a couple of people today they have confirmed that I may, indeed, be certifiably raving, to consider an LM.

Even the newest cars will soon be 15 years old and they are all starting to suffer from the effects of 80's design combined with patchy maintenance.

Poor part availability means that certain items, particularly suspension components, need to be custom fabricated.

£5k for a front caliper! £600 for a wiper motor! Wheels no longer avaiable, certain drive-line parts, no-longer available, etc. etc.

So the parting shot was "find a good one and you MIGHT be OK"..but...."there arent any good ones"!

A quick count would suggest that of the 300 cars made in total around 30 are currently up for sale!

Need to give this some more thought.

Didn't the Saudi Armed Forces buy a quantity? (or is that jsut a tall tale?)

I seem to remeber the Libyans were rather fond too (Again not sure where I read that - Quadaffi had one if I remember correctly!)

Perhaps sourcing one from these countries would mean that it would be considerably cheaper, and in the case of the Saudi ones probably looked after no expense spared... (well maybe !!)

When I was in Saudi last I almost bought the one in the pic below. Over there they dont have a value so I was gonna pay 10K. Car was mint on the inside but it looked like someone had had a go on the paint job and failed badly! The thing drove great and i almost had the beast ppi'ed until i decided to pull out because I was coming back here. Man I wish I had bought it.

The LM002 was the first Lamborghini I ever went in, and what an introduction. They are pretty special, but as has been mentioned most parts (except the 'usual' Lambo parts) are either impossible or very expensive to get hold of, and don't mention fuel consumption. £45,000 sounds about on the money for one of these.

I believe one car was developed with a Diablo engine installed, it was in the UK for a time and might still even be here. There was not, as far as I'm aware, an official production of Diablo engined LM002s though.
