Leaving after 1 year

Hi All,

I worked in mechanical design through my apprenticeship, and after completing it I decided to move into Structural Design as it's something that interested me. I took a role structural design at a competitor company, albeit in a completely different department/area.

I've been here ~1 year now, but came to realise that the construction industry isn't for me, and I do prefer the sort of mechanical design I was doing previously. The grass isn't always greener and all that.

What I'm wondering is that, if for example I were to try find a position elsewhere, would having worked my new job for just 1 year before leaving be a red flag for potential employers when they see my CV? I can imagine it would be.

I'm 22, so don't want to shoot myself in the foot so early on kinda thing.

+1. I think most of us would also fully expect somebody your age to still be finding what you want to do, so it's entirely understandable.

Don't worry about it. Generally people job-hop a lot more in their early/mid twenties anyway.

I'm not actively looking to leave, however I could be tempted if the right position appeared. I took a risk by leaving my first job admittedly, however you never know how you'll find something until you actually get stuck in.
