I'm having a devil of a time getting RAW images on the camera to the computer. The only success I've had is getting them from the camera to the EOS viewer Utility, but can't get them from there to CS. I know I'm not very computer literate but I'm not that thick, and it's driving me nuts!

PLEASE HELP!

Martin.

Is there a mode to allow you to mount the memory card in the camera as a disk? If so do that then just copy and paste from the card.

I know even less about Canon software than I do Nikon (!) but I reckon you should skip the Canon software, get your PC to see the camera as a removeable drive then cut and paste into a new folder. Cutting instead of copying saves the need to delete the images from the card afterwards.

But copying ensures you get the image on the computer before deleting it from the memory card.

Might i be allowed to ask a basic question?

Are you using a 20D?

If so have you installed the adobe patch for CS so that it can handle the RAW files?

I had a similar problem when i switched from 300D to 20D

You need the following file: Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw 2.4 update
1/31/2005 you can get it from the Adobe web site.

If you are looking for ultimate quality in RAW conversion; Capture One www.phaseone.com

The problem isn't opening them in CS, it is getting them from the camera so I doubt any plugin will help.

If he can get the pix into the canon software, why would he be having trouble getting them on to his pc?

I thought it was just poorly explained.

I use a card reader on both my laptop and main machine, XP copies over the files without any problem on both machines, but untill i installed the patch, neither would open the raw files from the 20D

i havent even bothered to open the canon software......does it download images straight from camera to a folder within the canon software, or do they still end up in my pictures?

Not sure there is on Canons, my D30 won't do it (but my ixus does though).

IF you're really stuck you could go and get a card reader for the PC. Comes up as anotehr drive on teh PC. It's much easier than faffing around with the USB lead.

The solution is to buy a dedicated card reader. Besides being a lot quicker you'll save wear and tear on that tiny USB socket on your camera.

As an example, my Sandisk firewire reader can dump 1gb of pics to the hard disk in 3-4mins. USB2 will be just slightly slower.

Although I have downloaded 2.4 it seems I havn't installed it properly. Luca Brazzi (my guardian angel) has told me how. First thing in the morning I'll carry out the instructions and let you know how I get on. I could be in the computer shop buying a CF reader by 11 if it doesn't go well!

I use a card reader for getting the CR2s off my 20D - much quicker and easier, just make sure you get a USB 2.0 reader...

However, if you just have the cable then if you set the camera communications (in the menu) to PTP as opposed to Normal then you should be able to see it as a disc in explorer in XP and just drag and drop them. When you switch it to PTP, EOSViewer cannot see the camera any more, but XP sees it as a drive.

However, you can just drag and drop them into a folder on your PC using EOSViewer when comms is in "Normal" mode.

Either way, once in a folder, if you have ACR 2.4 installed you should be able to open them using Photoshop.

Personally my workflow is to get them off with a card reader, process them in bulk using RawShooter or DPP (more RSE than DPP now I got the colours sorted) and then tit around in PShop if I need to after that - print using QImage - done!

Master...the first step taken I have!

Using the PTP method I'm getting RAW photos from camera to 'puter, thanks Bee Jay, and with plug-in 2.4 now succesfully installed , thanks Luca, I'm a happy bunny!

Martin.

Edited to add that I bought a laptop on Wednesday, so now I have to do it all again! But on the up side, I'm typing this in shorts and sandles on my terrace, it's 22 degs. and the birds are singing. Oh happy days!
