Morning all.

I took delivery of a brand new vehicle via lease last June and after several major component failures, it was agreed with the lease company, manufacturer and the dealer that the dealer would have the vehicle back as part ex and supply a brand new replacement that i collected beginning of this month.

However, I know for a fact that when it went back it had over 8K on the clock and even when all the problems were being discussed, they asked now many miles i had done, and at the time it was over 3K, but is now being sold via the dealers website with 2.5K miles.

Also, when i returned the vehicle, i gave them all of the warranty invoices and breakdown rescue paperwork that stated the mileages at the time of repair.

All this is with a main dealer and not a 'specialist' or broker.

Now, i cant do a drive by to check through the window as most vehicles don't have anything on the display unless the ignition is on.

Is there a particular route i should go down to report this?

I admit, I don't have any actual proof now as they have all the paperwork.

Cheers.

Could just be a simple typo on the website. Without proof I wouldn't be reporting it.

Report it to the garage and see if they change the description. If they do, then it was a typo. If they don't...

Sounds like a simple typo.

Wouldn't have thought it was worth clocking with such a low mileage to begin with. Plus I doubt a main dealer would be involved in such a stunt. Agree with others that it may be a simple admin error.

Get someone you know but the dealer doesn't to pop in and express interest in buying the vehicle.
Shouldn't be that difficult for them to find a pretext for getting the salesperson to turn the key.

I'm slightly more cynical and wouldn't expect it to be a typo!! Perhaps they have lost the history of component failures and it's being sold as a low mileage example with a clean history.....

Hi guys,

Thing is, its mileage was 8420 or something like that, so they must have been fairly ham fisted to manage to get 2500.

Anyway, they have modified the advert since i first spotted it, as they have now uploaded pictures, but no specification so maybe it will be amended when the ad is finished.

Strange thing is, they have plenty of used vehicles, and some with more mileage and older. Its not like they sell ex-demo only.

I have an alternate email address so i may send an enquiry next week and see what they come back with.

Who puts the mileage information into the advert? --> A Human Being --> Humans make mistakes! -That's just a fact of life!

The profit margins on cars sold by main dealers (both new and used), are quite piffling in the grand scale of dealership business - They make their big money on service, repairs and parts, so it's highly unlikely that they would bother to shave 6K miles off a car as the difference in price would only be a couple of grand at best.

If they did roll back the mileage and got caught, chances are the manufacturer would remove their franchise licence and they would go out of business. Do you really think they'd risk that for a poxy couple of grand? - I seriously doubt it!

That's quite a conclusion to leap to based on a single digit error
It's equally likely to be cosmic rays

Which single digit would that be?

Some years ago my father took his car into the supplying Ford dealers for a service and while he was waiting to collect it had a look around their s/h stock. They had a row of 1 year old cars of another make. Every one of them had exactly the same mileage of something like 9,462 on the clock. Almost as though someone had been told to wind them back, "to under 10,000, but to a random figure like 9,462 for example". biggrin

The more legal reason might be that whoever uploads the adverts uses a template and just transposes details over, sometimes about three minutes before going home. It's how you can buy seven seat Corsas, convertible Transits and diesel TVRs.

Do most dealers still put those stickers on speedos saying that the mileage cannot be guaranteed .

Indeed OP jumping to conclusions as per all the dealer defenders posting above. Used car sales people are renowned for their integrity and would never stoop to this clear case of a genuine error I mean how often do they get it wrong and put a higher mileage down on the advert? All the time right? For shame OP.

One of our Sales Administrators entered an incorrect mileage in our dealership, she got it 6,000 miles out.

Simple human error when entering into the Dealer Management System. That then was fed to the website and voila we were advertising a car with an incorrect mileage. This was discovered when a customer came to test drive the car.

We immediately corrected the mileage and the price of the vehicle.

Unfortunately it does happen.
