HELP, CHIM SICK

help, further to shunting problen i,ve posted a new prob. has reared it,s ugly head. when car got warm today there was a distinct scraping metallic noise from the general area of the cat. this was followed by a metallic clank when turning off. car running sweetly { apart from shunting }. any suggestions or should i start panicking and phone my bank for a loan ? peter

advice desperately needed, could it be the cat breaking up making the catching noise ? car is driving great and the noise only starts when she,s hot. and not all the time. never did it once this afternoon and i drove a good 50 miles, did it this evening after only 2 miles. also, only seems to happen when slowing down or idling, don,t think it,s happening when going, or maybe i just can,t hear it. peter

Had a nasty grinding/scraping noise from the front of the V8S a couple of weeks ago, poking around with a screwdriver I convinced myself it was coming from the timing cover. The guys at Tower View went over it with a proper stethoscope and tracked it down to the main cat. (They also pointed out a couple of bearings that were starting to rumble, but not loud enough to be heared with the naked ear.) I was amazed how much clearer the noises were with the stethoscope, must get me one of those.

We decided it was most likely the main cat breaking up and I asked them to open it up they were putting the new cam in, and see what state it was in. Once they had the Y piece off they looked in through the ends and found that there were a couple of baffles loose inside the cat. Presumably they had been welded in to the Y and broken loose with all the popping and banging mine has been doing. They were able to pull them out without cutting it open so quite a quick and cheap job.

Hope yours is similarly easy to find and fix.

if it is the cat, and that,s where the noise seems to be coming from, could that also cause the clank when turning off and on? this only happens once the engine is warm, same as the scraping noise. peter

Seems possible. I suggest you sort out the nasty noises and then see whether this makes any difference to the other problems you were having.

to greenv8s, thanks for your help but problem was much simpler after all, exhaust bracket bolt come out under the front. very relieved indeed, again, many thanks, peter
