Looking for a weekend car that's analogue/special and an 'event' to drive along with preferably being 2+2 (kids 6 and 4), hence currently looking at 996's (97/98 cable throttle) and 997's (obviously upping the budget), only looking at 2's and not 4's so narrow body. Challenge being current garage width... Although the door/entrance is 8 feet wide the width is reduced in the middle due to a chimney breast (garage is under the house), I've looked into removing the chimney breast but it's not practical to do so. Minimum width is 7ft 5in which is around the area the car door would open. I've attached carpet to the walls etc. but still have concerns around what will fit in the garage whilst allowing enough space to get in and out. The drive in front of the garage is sloped so not possible to get out first and push in!

Would anyone be good enough to get a tape measure out and measure width across the car including an extra 1-2 inches past the passenger mirror and enough gap on the driver's side with driver's door opened just enough to allow access, I guess with window down? Luckily I'm slim and I'm hoping that as 911's are slimmer in the middle there will be enough room to open the door enough to gain access.

Anyone else manage with a slim garage?

Mine is 8ft 2 and it's quite tight. I have to have the windows when I get in and out. I've got a pillar that narrows the garage too but it's by the part of the door that doesn't impact on opening.

987 (so the same width across the doors). 7ft door, 7ft 3 garage.

That's same width as my garage would be without the chimney. Shane it can't be removed!

That looks very tight, with the roof up can you get the door open enough to get in and out?

Although I don't have a picture (can share tomorrow), my garage is probably as narrow (or potentially slightly more) than HKB's.

Can fit a 987 Cayman in mine although it is quite tight, requires wing mirror retraction. You may want to take a tape measure to the dealership, then you can visualise how easy it will be for you. Also consider whether you can get out of the car when the door is not fully open.

Regarding the chimney, similar situation - small turn of the wheel once i have cleared it preferable (but not necessary)- helps with a bit of extra clearance to open the door, getting in/out.

As others have commented - carpet + no more nails is your friend. Managed to pick up a bunch of sample tiles from a local carpet place for 50p each.

My garage is 7ft 4inches across and I get my 991 into it. I have to take the window down to get in/out but still use the door. In climbing in... but can't put any weight on!

Thanks for the comments so far. Feeling quite hopeful now, just measured it accurately and at the narrowest point it's 235cm (7.85 feet). I have also tried the e46 daily in there, just fits and I can get in and out with a squeeze. That said it's a touring so doors are relatively short, but still... More optimistic now 😊

It's relatively easy with the windows down. You'll be fine.

With the roof up it is nigh on impossible. Roof down, no problem. Other cars I have parked in there are a Skoda Fabia Mk2 which was tight but fine and VW E-Up which was fine.

Really the garage is built for an Elise, but we love the house and can't bring ourselves to move

Some more pics in the 7ft 3 garage of the 987.

If you get it this close (!)

You have this much room to get out:

But you could get out before the door is compromised by the chimney breast and push it in the last couple of feet if needed.

That's impressive parking. I used to think my garage was really narrow and it's just under 7'10". I can get in and out of the MX-5 with the roof up but it's a real squeeze - might be getting less flexible as I get older...…..

Gives you more room to get in/out in narrow garages when you can only open the door by a small amount. That's what I do.

The window is usually slanted towards the car so by being up it narrows the gap for exit. Window down and you can pop your head and shoulders out first then just shuffle your legs past the door.
