Just a few shots of Matt and my car. I won't embaress the poor bloke by telling you all that there is not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that this young man will earn his crust as a pro. Oops...I just did.

Martin.

I too think Matt has a future as a pro, Evo magazine would be just right for him

Could have been worse - might have been in the car desparate to get out quickly for a natural break ...

So you're on a narrow country lane making progress and a tractor comes round a corner towards you. What do you sacrifice? (Actually I'm just jealous - the kit looks superb.)

Nice flare effects BTW - is that a special feature in CS?

Coat already on and I'm half way out the door

Matt are you entertaining thoughts of going pro? If so, would you restrict yourself to motoring photography initially?

I graduate in 7 weeks, so Im going to give it a shot and see where I get to for a while. Ive spent a lot on gear and Im working on a new site at the moment which I see as necesssary before I give it a go.

Im also actively seeking cars to shoot for my portfolio which I think needs to be a bit bigger and more varied before I go and seek work.

I have done some commissioned automotive photography recently which went down very well and considering the car and the client it was an enormous privilege although unfortunately I can't show the pics or say anything more about it. I have to say it didnt really feel like work and it was nice to get paid to play.

I say go for it

When I graduated I was lucky enough for my parents to support me for one year to try and do what I loved and was good at (it was also the middle of Mr Major's recession, so jobs for marine biologists were thin on the ground to say the least!). It was an opportunity I took and did everything I could for.

Now when I reflect back on those times I know I gave everything and I have no regrets and I look back on those times with great pleasure.

If you don't try what will you think in 5-10 years?

From what you post here Matt you're a very talented photographer and your passion for cars comes through in your work. Go for it man !

Chris
P.S. I know this may be underhand but you do know a certain Mr Tomlin reads PH don't you? A quick email may be in order once you have finalised you initial portfolio

I agree - go for it...

I had all my gear stolen the day I left college (2 Canon A1s with motorwinds and lots of lovely lenses) and had already started doing paid work. My insurance refused to pay out due to me not being covered while moving house !!!

I got a temp job in IT (Comp Sci degree) to get the money to replace the kit, and am still in IT many years later only now being able to afford decent kit again.

Only problem for me is going pro now is a bit harder now I have a mortgage/kids etc. Will make the leap in the next couple of years though if the timing is right.

I envy you immensely...

I am in exactly the same boat as you Matt (allbeit with slightly less kit ). Although I have already done some magazine work and my dissertation for university should help me on my way
