I've got a stiffie..
Discussion
Well after admitting that I also have an erectile dysfunction, it now seems that my problem is that I have a stiffie that was causing all my problems.
After reading all the useful technical information on Ian's website

Checking power to certain terminals at various points..
I took the top off the motor expecting to see loads of obvious corrosion on terminals .. sadly it all looked immaculate.
Next, not really wanting to take the motor apart unless I had too, I decided to swap the motors left to righ and right to left. This would eliminate the wiring completely ..
then the eureka moment, I decided to turn the lights on and spin the kurled nut. When doing ths I noticed just how stiff it was and checked the other side via the access window in the wheel arch .. that turned easily. I kept turning the stiff motor and hey presto, it spun on its own. I spun again, still stiff but not as stiff, it again spun up on it own, repeat again and less stiff. Next I tried the switch and it worked on its own. I powered it on and off about 6 times. All OK. Checking the knurled knob again and now its nice and free.
So, with wedges being laid up over winter and longer periods, it seems that as well as firing up the engine every now and then, we should also turn the lights on and off a few times to stop the lifter motors becoming stuck.
Anyone else have a stiffie ?
