Boys,

Need to get proof that the Cerb is insured back home as a requirement of getting it past U.S customs.

Just got a quote of £1200 a year.

26 (I was only 21 a few days ago it seems)
Garaged
Kensington, London
5+ NCB

I will just cancel the policy after the first month but I need the document to enter the U.S.

Does this price seem about right?

make sure you pay monthly so that you can cancel. I bought from a broker last time, had the car for 21 days post the renewal. I told them I might cancel, they said dont worry we wont sting you! Yeah right! About 5 months premium in the end! One of the top brokers for TVR as well!

Cheers mate. Yep, was going to set it up monthly and then cancel. Bloody hell, getting all the documents together from outside of the country is an absolute headache. Going to be well worth it though.

Why are US Customs so bloody Anal What difference does it make if it's insured here or not????

Oh by the way, agree with Gazza, just read the small print of the policy for any early cancellation penalty clauses.

Make sure you limit your mileage, it makes a big difference to the cost of the insurance, no point in paying for unlimited if you are only going to do 3-4k a year.
I know you're going to cancel any way, so it wont matter to you, but it will bring the initial £1200 cost down.

£1200 is loads of cash..... who was that with? I got a quote for £660 from Tesco and a little more than that with my current insurer, Elephant.

Your age, and post code wont help, plus you havent mentioned points?

I limited my mileage to 6k a year.

I am 28 with full NCB, 9 yrs is it? No limited mileage, and I can use it for work.

£800 with £200 excess.

The difference being if you are a Doctor, or dare I say a pilot, with high levels of responsability you're less likely to smash the car up!

Yeah right

if you only need ins for customs then surely you can be 'generous' re the way you complete the proposal.

Mara

This sounds nuts to me. I'm an ex-UK customs officer and I now work in the private sector for a US company. We have a few very good US customs brokers on our payroll. I'm sure I can put you in touch with one to help you get through this nightmare.

Let me know if you want some help and I'll give you a couple of numbers.

Wouldn't it be easier to get a Dodge Viper?

No! No Viper. Drove one in Hawaii for a few days and apart from the fact that it was brutally powefull that was about the only reason I kept getting in it. Everyone stared at the car and lots of "ooh, Viper" from passers by but when I rented the Maser Spider and the 355 Spider it just felt worlds apart.

Ok, the quote was with Tesco.

I selected the following:

26 year old
Professional
Licence 3+ years
NCB 5+
No points convictions (got to get up bloody early to catch me)
W11 postal code
Garage

No protected NCB
No car cover
£250 excess

I got it down to £1100 by deselecting everything I could.

I am wondering, seeing as I won't actually be driving the thing before it gets to the U.S, could I not just select the safest (read low catagory) job title? I mean, the policy will be cancelled as soon as it is issued. Just need the paperwork.

AngusF, will email you a bit later mate. Cheers.

You can also reduce it further by adding another person as a named driver.

For London, that quote looks about right. I am 37 with as much no claims as one can possibly muster, and live in SW London - £1100.

Question: Does it have to be insured on the owner/US driver's name, or just "insured" full stop. If the latter, see if some kind soul in their 40s in the middle of nowhere (no crime), with 20 years NCB can help you out for a few quid.

Tesco's insurance system is technically UKI, the same as many, MANY other insurers - would check with those (as they all vary parameters a little) too. The first names that spring to mind are Direct Line and Egg. Conversely, check with policies that AREN'T technically UKI ones - Asda is a good alternative.

You could also try ringing some of the specialists where there's a "person" on the other end of the phone; explain your situation to them - that it's zero risk as you'll not be driving it in the UK, etc. that it's only for a month, and so on, and see if they can do you a deal.

Hi
Have you tried moneysupermarket.com or co.uk go to the insurance section. It will search around for 50 quotes. I pay £750 a year with direct line.

Good luck

Yep, car has to be insured in my name. Basically to show it really belongs back home and is used back home.

I thought that adding another driver would have pushed the cost up?

Depends on their risk profile. If they're in their 30s/40s, loads of no-claims, etc. then you might well save £100+

Hmm, getting to the point where I cannot be arsed. Just want my car. Over looking this car showroom and keep running over to the window as everything you can imagine pulls out and floors it up the hill. Nice white Gallardo with black rims just did the honours

So, calls have been made and hopefully, by the 3rd/4th I will be in the fold. FINALLY. JSG, get yourself back in my son

Shipping? sorted!
Paper work? via fax!
Painful wait? on it's way!

AngusF, YHM - give me a minute to type it though
