Hi,

Just posting to see what opinions are and what advise yu can offer me regards getting a 996 (911).
Currently have a Corvette C5 but looking to change in the upcoming weeks/month. I think i'm looking at a C4 with Tiptronic shift. But would really like Turbo wheels with clear lights at the front... Is the C4 better than the C2? Are there any extras that are a must? Are colourful interiors difficult to find? What are the best colours etc etc..
I have test drive one and was impressed with the ride quality, response and feel in cornering but was a little dissapointed with the grunt...

If you look at my profile pic' you will see my C4 tip' with Turbo look 2 wheels. I love it. I still smile at the way it corners. As an every day car the C4 with tiptronic is just great. There are a lot of people on here will say C2 and manual change are best but in the real world ? It depends on how you want to use it. I think a lot of people spec' their cars for the track and then spend most of the time stuck on our cr@p roads. I tracked my C4 and got 100% of the performance I wanted but "normally" on UK roads I'm lucky to use 60% of the performance available. The best colour is the one you like.

lovely looking motor.... I have to have a Tiptronic due to health issues so theres no argeument for me in regards to manual vs auto

Do people lower 911's at all or are they best left alone in that repect?

Thanks I think it looks great. The Carrera spoiler and the 18" turbo wheels transformed the look without being too "loud".

To answer your question, for road use best left alone IMHO.

Hi Alex,
Love Corvettes, very nearly got one my self.
Compared with your C5, in a 996 C4 you will lose a lot of straight line grunt, especially at low speeds. However, the handling will be another dimension! Also, the compact dimesnions will be a positive.
As you are used to that luvely US plastic interior, you won't feel too far from home in a 996......

I have to say the change from huge torque to something a lot less will influence your driving technique. If you`ve mastered driving a `vette in all conditions then the switch should not be a problem.I owned two Corvettes , one a 350 ci ( 350bhp) the other a 454ci , I think the problems may occur the other way around, going from small torque to rat or mouse power.............

Thanks for the comments guys, I think i will miss the grunt that the vette offers. that was the first thing that i noticed but it felt so compact and wrapped itself around me. And the Tiptronic box was very cool, never had one before.... What genuine MPG can i expect? It must be better than the vette

Just had mine for a week, am getting 20mpg.
Not that bad, but the small tank means it feels very thirsty.
and I've just come from a 4.0L Supercharged XJR, that was doing 17mpg.
Was expecting the Porsche to be better

20mpg = London/city driving.

Most of my journeys are round trips 90 to 200 miles. I get between 22 and 28 mpg. Worst was a Donnington Park track day when I got about 7 mpg and the best was a trip to Scotland when I got just over 30 mpg.

If grunt is an issue then you really should go for a C2 manual. I test drove a C4 tip and was so unimpressed I almost gave up on the idea of buying a 911. I then drove a C2 manual with sports pack and was shocked at the difference. Needless to say I now own said car.

The C2 vs C4 has been done to death, but the C4 really offers very little advantage over the C2 unless it is the wetest of conditions and driving VERY hard. You have got to be pretty stupid to lose it in a C2.
As for the tip vs manual, this really is a personal preference, but again, the manual offers a slight increase in performance and a greater level of involvment with the car.

Will - I like the spolier and wheels. Can you let me know what you paid for these items and where you purchased them from?

Cheers
