yesterday at santa pod the fireforce jet funny car set a new world record quarter mile speed at 336mph this as far as i can work out is fastest ever ran by a none rocket powered vehicle, its faster than the america jets and top fuel dragsters.

A few of the drag racing forums I look at are querying the Fireforce run. Apparently the timing crew at Santa Pod are happy with it, and if correct it will indeed be the fastest jet anything 1/4 mile speed, but something doesn't feel quite right - 5.7 seems too slow for such a big speed, although the jets do tend to be lazy away from the line then pile on the speed in the second half of the track. Just seems like too big a jump, considering he normally runs around 270mph. That said, he did run a 288mph 1000ft early shut off earlier in the day, so if he did stay on it for the whole 1320ft I suppose it's feasible. Testicles of steel either way!

Doubt we'll see another run like that at an FIA/MSA event, as I think that speed (if genuine) will have given the organisers the jitters. Be interesting to see if he can run that fast at non sanctioned events. Guess the Speedfreaks Ball will be the place to do it.

Edited to add - congratulations to Jon Webster on his first four.
