Whining/Pump Noise behind driver's side rear wheel
Discussion
Hey all,
Had a long drive over this weekend and noticed once when stopped with engine running that there was some kind of whining/pump noise coming from behind the driver's side rear wheel. Noise went away by itself the next day and has not returned. Wondered if anyone knows what it could have been and whether I should be worried!
In the nearly 3 years that I've had her it's the first time she's done it so I'd class it as 'unusual'.
All fluid levels look to be okay. Brake fluid is about halfway between max and min so will top that up.

Yep, I've heard that once or twice, should be fine. I learnt not to worry about fuel pump noises ever since my Renault 5 GT Turbo that had a secondary pump which insisted on trying to scavenge every last drop out of its auxiliary tank every time the fuel level dropped in the main tank. You learnt to top up the tank before driving in a hilly area !
The analogy between the Corvette gearchange and a Victorian signal box is, I believe, extremely unfair on the Victorian signal box. Selecting 6th without some exaggerated gesture akin to elbowing somebody sharply in the ribs is almost impossible and many was the time changing from 3rd to 4th at full chat when the lever drifted ominously towards second gear. Then there was the "I'm going to accelerate hard in 3rd...now!" only to find I was still in 5th. LOL.
I already have a Breathlesss shifter which I've got to fit.....soon.

Sounds to me like a retired old bugger like me should stick to auto. Without going into the auto/manual debate again, there are times when I would like a manual but I can always stir the gear selection lever up and down like I did the other day. Thought I'd put it into 2nd, booted it and hit the rev limiter really hard as I was in 1st by mistake (and I've got big numbers to help me - not little ones on the top of a small knob).
I've always thought the auto spoilt the Z28 and in fast press-on driving, it does. However, for the most part and though I hate to admit it, it's much easier to drive the Z28 and I kind of prefer it, bar the lesser power and handling. There, I've said it. I may change my mind when I fit the shifter.
Part of the reason the auto is now better than it was is the addition of a push-down shiftknob which makes changing up and down the box an absolute doddle although they don't seem to do one for the C5 (at least not from the company i bought mine from).

WHAT!!!
You are STILL using the standard gear change! You must have a long reach!!!!
First thing I did was fit the BPP shifter, which is brill BTW and easy to fit takes about 40 minutes.
Instructions somewhere on the web........you will need a flathead screwdriver to lever the aluminium wedge out of the top of the know under the gear pattern plastic cover. Apart from that it is simple.
With the BPP shifter you get a number of choices as to the stiffness of the throw adjusted with 3 sets of springs, also you can adjust the angle with a wedge in the join between the stick and the shifter and also there is more than one set of holes to make the shift longer, shorter, further forward, back left or right.
Might I be so bold as to suggest you run the car a while without putting the console back in or at least try sitting in the drivers seat and try the stick before putting it all back together again........may sound obvious, but I bet you wouldn't be the first.
I was lucky I got it right first time, I used the red springs (I think) and also stick left of selector and upright without the wedge.
Transforms the driving experience IMHO.

I think CF recommends the softest springs which is where I'll be starting but thanks for the glimmer of hope and I'm a barrister, ya git. LOL.
I think you may have said you had the straight stick but mine is the dog's leg so I'll have to play with it.

You Welsh and your dog legs!!!
Mine came in two parts. The lever and the shifter. The lever bolts to the shifter, but from memory there are at least 3 holes on the shifter therefore you can change the position of the lever.
Change the shifter, it only takes half an hour. I too fitted the lightest springs in mine after trying each one out. Its a very good idea to try each spring before putting the console back, not only for the convenience but also because you get to drive the car without anything to get between the noise in the transmission tunnel and your ears - really wakes you up if you do it early on a Sunday morning !
