Hi guy's,

I know a few of you on here have these - so I have a couple of questions for you.

Looking at the spec sheet the 700i doesn't come with a USB connection, but does have a 'fire-wire' (IEEE1394) connection. Can I use the fire-wire to dump and edit footage on my PC?? (can't seem to work it out from the brochure).

How easy is it to use? - having not had a comcorder before.

Cheers

Chris

Firewire is basically a faster version of USB but uses a different connector.

If you've got a firewire port on your computer then plug in and use that to download footage

Most modern computers should have one If not, Firewire ports aren't thaaat expensive

If you've got a firewire port then you're sorted.

Plug camera into firewire port with cable and the computer should auto-detect.

and if you dont have the cable, dont pay silly money for it! i remember when i first got my MV650i, most of the shops wanted silly money for just a cable, so instead i paid about £2 for a cable from ebuyer.

It may come with a firewire to USB cable. Just passed a 750i onto my missus' grandad and that has a firewire <-> USB cable with it. Slower than a proper firewire cable but should at least still allow transfer off the camcorder. Would recommend getting a proper firewire cable all the same.

I bought a 700i in John Lewis about 3 weeks ago. It doesn't come with a firewire cable - don't buy one in JL (£14-95) or Dixons (£19-95) - I got one from Amazon for under a fiver.

Plugged it into my HP PC, and XP way surpassed my expectations (that it would crash) by popping up a window saying it had found new hardware and did I want it installed, then asking if I wanted to import video, then automatically importing the video into MovieMaker2. I was dead impressed.

One mistake I did make was that I wanted a remote control and the 700i doesn't appear to have one.

Thanks for the tip!

Just checked on Ebuyer and there seem to be different cables - 6 pin/4 pin or 9 pin/4 pin. Which type is it? odes it depend on the equipment or the card in the PC??

Ooh, I never saw the 9 pin one. The camera has a 4 pin socket and the built-in firewire on my HP Pavilion was a 6 pin. I dunno if that's a standard or not - I just peered at the relevant sockets.

my apple iBook uses a 6 pin firewire plug, and my MV650i uses a 4 pin firewire plug, so i use a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
