Dont forget that if you react with terror & panic & run about screeching like a gibbering irrational wreck THEY WILL home in on you and sting you.
If however you are cool and nonchalant and couldnt care less, they wont come anywhere near you.
I have found this to be true after decades of observing this amongst all and sundry.

Saw two bumblebees in the garden just now. They were so big they were pulling down the branch of the tree they were on! 
Just as a reminder though, products like Multirose kill bees so please don't use it now they're out and about. Much better to find a friendly ladybird or two to stick on your roses, they love the 24 hour buffet!

This is very true and needs to be more widely appreciated.
In the autumn I get loads of wasps coming in for some reason and buzzing round the ceiling light. Then when I go to bed they come and buzz round the bedside light. They're not any kind of problem; they don't sting me because I don't freak out. Sometimes I end up giving them banana skins and making friends with them.
As I understand it the ones around now are queens that have been hibernating and are now looking for somewhere to nest. Bumble bee's I leave alone but wasps that try to make a home in the garden or house I kill, mainly because quite a few thousand offspring can bee annoying.

I admit to being a bit of a wildlife fan, but wasps scare the **** out of me cos I'm one of those lucky people who are highly allergic to the sting. One sting and I'm a gonner if I don't inject the adrenalin

While i don't like wasps (having a wasp nest above your bedroom as a kid is a make or break sort of thing) I do appreciate what they do and that is keep all of the other creepy crawlies under control!
As for not bothering you? Get one trapped by accident and it will still sting you and heaven forbid if you come across a hornets nest - chilling out is not going to protect you one little bit. Just pray when it happens it is a nice cool day so they are more passive, find them on a scorcher and you will know pain

Not sure what you are on about? They don't bother me in the main. Late summer and wasps get pesky so watch out for them then. I am just more aware than others I guess. Cool summer days and you can tease a bumble off a leafe and into your palm. although I wouldn't recomend it.

just ignore them as others have said is the best bit of advice.i know what it's like to p1$$ 'em off as i cut a nest in half the other year with a chainsaw when felling a tree.the nest was hanging in a hedgerow right next to the tree that was being felled.next thing i know was a scratching sensation round my head,i thought it was bramble as i had my head burried in the hedgerow near enough.2 secs later the pain hit,it looked quite funny to the others as i looked up saw a swarm of wasps,launched the saw and ran around the garden hitting my self in the head.got zapped about 10 times all round the ear,neck and cheek.
funny ting was about 15 mins later my mate comes and says "bet ya can't guess what i've just found".it was a huge wasps nest about the size of a football just on the inside of a laurel bush he was hedge cutting.he has missed it by about an inch.if he had hit it i don't think he would be alive todayjust the vibration of the hedge cutter had pi$$ed them off enough for us not to be able to get in the gate

A few years ago my brother's house was invaded by wasps and it transpired the nest was under his grass in the garden. There were two holes about six feet apart where the wasps were going in and out of.
Anyway, he poured a load of methylated spirits (gallons of the stuff) and lit it. It burned for hours and the wasps totally went mental. However, the next day the wasps were back to normal - totally unmoved by the attempted destruction.
