Fan staying on

When I stopped today one of the cooling fans continued. It's been a hot day, so although I'd not driven far, I thought nothing of it. 45 minutes later I popped out and it was still running! Coolant system has no obvious problems, so not sure what might be causing this. Any ideas?

In the meantime I've disconnected the offending fan, but will probably have to reconnect it for my traffic-jam journey back from work tomorrow night.

Could it be that the otter switch has failed, but that only one fan is actually working? (i.e. they would both be on) Is the horn working? If not a fuse may have gone.

I'd short out the fan switch & reconnect the fan. THe fans should then be running when the ignition is on.

unlike some cars the fans on Chimaera go off with the ignition. A failed otter switch usually results in the fans not coming on at all. So, something weird is afoot for the fan to be on with the ignition off. Has there been a manual override mod done, which is inadvertantly switched on? I'd still try the above though.

I usually bypass the switch by the use of a paper clip & some insulation tape!

It might have had a cooling kit fitted, and the switch/thermostat that controls their operation has failed.

My fans turn off with the ignition.

On some cars the live supply to the fan relays is permanently live and the reason the fans do not work with the ignition off is because the relay coil is ignition switched.

If this is true on your car a sticking relay could be your problem, easiest way to check is by swapping the two relays and see if the problem goes to the other side.

If you have a short that is keeping your fan running after the ignition is off, pulling the relay should stop it. Since the circuit to the otter switch should only be live with the ignition on I would be a little concerned - there may be other circuits being toasted? Cost of possible melted / fused wires in the loom wouldn't be worth risking IMHO.
