CND Headlights

Dear All

I have a TR4. Early 1962 car so got a mix of TR3 and 4 bits, domed glass, brass rail, short hump bonnet. Its a lhd and am going to convert it to rhd

The question is... It has these really lovely period looking headlights with what look like a thin steel triangular frame, ala CND logo inside the glass. I would like to keep this but obviously would not be a good idea as now will be driving on the wrong side.

Would any sage know what these are called, if they were ever available in RHD set and a dealer if still available??

I imagine what you are looking for are Lucas P700 Headlamps (or a derivative of). Do a Google there readily available.

These are lovely looking period lights, Moss amongst other suppliers will sell you repro RHD units. If you are using the car regularly at night I wouldn't suggest using them as they are particularly pants at projecting light even with decent bulbs. Fit a decent halogen conversion kit with relays fitted and enjoy seeing where your going

I have the two candle power PL700 lights on the E-type but I would not recommend the new chinese-made replicas. They are made out of chocolate. NOS Lucas ones are hard to find and quite expensive nowadays so unless originality is paramount use ordinary 7" ones.

I second Lowdrag's comments. The copies are ok if you don't want to use them! Sadly like a lot of far overseas sourced parts...ok to look at, but otherwise....

Genuine question, in what way are the inferior. If you use a Philips bulb what's the problem?
Mind you I don't think these tripod lights would suit a TR4, I think they look more '50s rather than '60s.

The answer is shoddy manufacture. I discussed them while restoring my own car several years back and was told that the metal is so thin that even if you set up the beams correctly that after a few miles one light may well be lighting the heavens and the other the front bumper.Finding NOS or rechromed originals is very difficult and may well be very expensive now. Given that they are more form over function I should have fitted halogens but I am a Luddite at heart I guess.
