Anyone know what method the cameras use to see past the headlights to view the number plate?
Infra red and the reflectivity of your plate makes it a cinch.
My front plate on the other hand doesnt reflect and ANPR dosent pick it up either...i should know, i got followed and pulled by the peelers when they didnt get a "Hit".
Didnt say nothing about the plate though cos the ANPR dosent give a reason for "no lock on".
DeltaFox said:Yup. the retro type reflector behind the numbers will always return light/IR to the direction from where it came. Its like having a perfectly angled mirror all the time (for all directions). The camera/sensor may show the VRM being brighter than the (dipped) headlamps.

I wonder what would happen then if you bought a backlit numberplate (white) and shoved some big old bulbs behind it, but only giving out IR?
A better solution would be to have the characters of the VRM transparent to IR (no IR bulbs needed); they would be invisible when illuminated with an IR lamp. Best bit is, in the case of a pull, they would look normal when checked with the naked eye under normal light.
Not sure if I should post this......too late

And DeltaF - what did you do to your front plate so that it achieved such magical properties?
Oli.

Doesn't glass block IR signals?

Let me know how you get on

Glass will block (far) IR, but is usually transparent for near IR (typical laser speedgun wavelength).
If glass blocked all IR, how would laser speedguns function? (they use collimating lenses)
