Getting rid of the smell of EP90 gearbox oil...
Discussion
Mods, please leave this in the Lounge as this is about household cleaning products, not car parts!
I have a piece of interior car trim that has come into contact with stinky EP90 gearbox oil and now hums. What is the best stuff to try and remove the stink?
Basically it's a headlining panel out of a Defender which I bought at a parts sale, and I only realised the stinkiness on the way home. The panel is made out of a sort of fibreboard stuff...this is the bit I really need to clean, as the plan is to remove the cloth covering anyway and replace it. In short, it doesnt matter if the cleaner bleaches things, as any damage will be covered over anyway.
Thanks in advance!!

Two things spring to mind but, sorry, it may be a long lasting problem.
Bicarbonate of soda is great at absorbing bad smells, give it good thick dusting, allow it to absorb what ever it can over a few hours, at least, and then sweep up.
Another thought is lime or lemon, perhaps one of those Jif lemon juice things, this is only going to be a mask.
autoglym sell an odour eliminator, never used it though, I think that there is also a domestic spray called Oust which is supposed to do more than mask a smell.
Finally, and last resort, if the oil is soaked in, is there an oil that could be applied to the surface that is a better smell than the gear oil, for example yankee candles make scents of candles for men, such as coffee, aftershave and I heard that there was a candle using the smell of nitro and burnt rubber! Melt the wax, add a little solvent and rub it into the fibreboard.
This is going to be an uphill task, by the time you have finished with all these products it may be better to replace.
