I'm off to Florida for a week in 2 weeks time, then a cruise round the Bahamas. I intend to enjoy myself fully food/drink wise!

For background, I have lost 3 stone since January 2016, and am gradually losing about a pound a week by eating moderately sensibly, doing a parkrun each Saturday, 2 spin sessions plus a bit of weights a couple of times per week. I'm about a stone off my long term target.

If I have a bad day (takeaway, full fat fizzy drinks, chocolate etc) I can put on 3 pounds easily. Goes within a few days as I assume it is mainly water retained by my confused body?

However I went on a 3 night cruise about 6 months ago and put on 12 pounds :-0 - and I didn't go too mad food/drink wise tbh. Lost half of that within a few days of being back, the rest a week afterwards.

So I'm trying to figure out how much I am likely to put on in 2 weeks of really enjoying myself.............I think I will put on a stone, lose half within a week of being back, the rest a couple of weeks later. I intend to exercise fairly hard every day just to keep the routine going for when I get back.

Whaddya reckon?

A stone sounds about right. My work varies a lot and is mostly quite physical but from time to time involves a lot of driving and not much more. I try to eat less when I'm not doing as much but I'm a big eater anyway.
I can go up or down a stone in two weeks quite easily.

This sounds about right. If it goes on quickly, it comes off quickly.

My record is 14 lbs in 2 weeks on a cruse.

So, that.

Don't get overly expectant on dropping that 1/2 stone quickly, it will take a while to come off, again, and will be a bit sole destroying at times, it's hard after a big gain to get back on it and stay on it.

I find nowadays although I'll eat what I want, I try to stay away from gluttony biggrin, so for example I've not got a massive sweet tooth, so last holiday I said no to deserts, mostly, unless I really wanted them, then I'd have one, but not just eat a desert with every meal just because I'm on my holidays.

I'd say, whatever weight you gain on your time away, ignore it. Don't even think about stepping on the scales for at least a few weeks after. Allow your body and routine to return things back to normal.

I've known people freak out when they weigh themselves daily and if they have put on a tiny amount it's the end of the world for them.

If you really intend to not worry for the duration I reckon you could do a couple of stone. The fact you've lost 3 stone recently (well done by the way smile ) tells us that you're a bit 'big' as the doctors like to elude to (fat to anyone else) & you didn't get that way through moderation so it maybe too easy to fall back into your old habits. If you're serious about your health now (which with the weight loss you appear to be) I'd show a modicum of restraint whilst still enjoying yourself & aim for nothing more than a stone.

Have you spoken to your doctor about the possibility of water retention as it sounds like this is adding to your weight (have you pressed your skin as a self test?)? The trouble with water retention is its not just in your ankles for example (where people most seem to notice it) but throughout your body so can impact on breathing & heart rhythm (my wife has to take them for heart lung condition). Do you struggle for breath a bit more when you've gained a few pounds?

I put a stone on in two weeks over last Christmas. It's taken me until now to shift it. I've not touched crisps, chocs, cakes, alcohol etc since xmas and it's taken until now

Impressive numbers everyone. hehe

I thought the first couple of posters were massively over estimating their holiday weight gain but then more and more of you kept posting similar amounts .

If I put on a couple of pounds in a weeks holiday, I think I've done badly. I'm usually running most days and not really going for the booze and food though.

I've always wondered how much weight I would put on if I really went for it over a week or month,

I fact, I've just got back from a weeks holiday yesterday and put on 2 pounds, perhaps it's water retention and bloating from the flight and it will be better tomorrow. hehe

I think getting on the scales the minute you return will give an inaccurate reading, ok the weight will be true but if you go from a pre-holiday diet to returning after a long haul flight, load of booze and crap food, would probably need a couple of days of normal eating to stabilise.

The general rule of thumb it takes an extra 3500 calories or so to gain a pound of fat, so an average man would need to eat/drink 6,000 calories a day to gain a stone over a two week holiday.

I would guess that is do-able, I was drinking ia thing called a "Lime a Rita" in Vegas, the 24 oz cans are 660 calories each, was having two or three a day, plus buffet food etc so can see how you would do it though I would end up so full I would then not eat for a day, could certainly do in 6000 cals, bit not sure I could do every day for two weeks.

How does anyone put on 3lb in one 'bad day'? That's 10,000 calories or so even if your body wasn't consuming energy at the same time.

Unless trying to, and even then, it would be hard, they dont, they may gain 3 pounds of scale weight but that is water, glycogen, digesting food and waste. Even really those who just go for it will find it is self limiting, you pig yourself, then feel bloated so dont eat for ages, you can only ft so much in in a 24 hour period.

I guess there is the physical weight of the food? I know on Friday morning I was 4lb lighter than I was on Sunday morning. Was a bit of a pig on Friday and Saturday nights..

I am particularly sponge like in that I can quite easily put on 10 pounds on a weeks holiday in the sun.

Does not bother me at all as I know that most of it is simply water retention and bloating caused by a perfect storm of blubber inducing effects: changes to gut function. flight, environmental changes, different foods, different water, beer, salt, sugar, overeating, sleep disruption, eating late etc etc

Two weeks after I return I am usually back to normal.

Thought I'd update this now I'm back :-)

I ended up putting on 8lbs during the 2 weeks. Lost 1lb by yesterday, expect to lose a couple more this week and then just need to get rid of the rest asap.

Food wise - ate fairly badly but smaller portions than I have done in previous holidays and pretty much no snacking.

Drink wise - no alcohol as I rarely drink, but LOADS of sugary fizzy drinks, I am certain that this accounts for all of the weight gain.

Exercise - good intentions but only hit the gym once, but did quite a few days of walking around

Overall fairly happy that I haven't gone too much off track, but manflu and a bit of jetlag combined means I feel really dodgy at the moment - poor me.

Sugary fizzy drinks, didnt think of those, can put away litres of the stuff in a day if you put your mind to it, loads of extra calories that dont fill you up, you just pee it out.

Try the Florida Parkrun while you are there - you get given cucumbers at the end, randomly.

Lovely run around a lake.
http://www.parkrun.us/clermontwaterfront/

On a recent 3 week jaunt to the US we didnt hold back on the eating (calling everything 0 calorie) and some days were completely sendentary, lots of driving from NY/DC/Niagara, but on the days where we were sightseeing I tried to keep up the running.

Its a lot easier to do with the holiday mindset and the fact you are running around a different place.

As a result I put on 2lbs over the three weeks and didnt really notice it (apart from being jealous of myself "last week" on my return to Blighty and my pelting!)

I was planning to do Clermont parkrun but they had a 12k event on the day I was there, so parkrun was cancelled. Gutted as it looks like a nice one!
