£24,500 parking fine.....
Discussion
So it sounds like she was continuously parking in the same place for what I assume was months if not years so the firm eventually took her to court and won.
Very different from ignoring the odd ticket from a supermarket car park but generally sticking two fingers up to a firm repeatedly. I'm not surprised they saw that one through really.
That said, I always thought it was a case of them being able to claim reasonable costs and £24k seems somewhat high.

There's not much info in the BBC article other than that she thought she couldn't be fined and the parking involved a garage.
I'd wager that she was blocking in a garage (with the permission of the garage owner, if that wasn't her) - so thought that the fines weren't valid, as she wasn't parked in a space for which a permit was required, and her presence there didn't prevent the use of any of those such spaces (only the garage, which was either hers or whom had given permission).
I believe this is something of a grey area if this is done on the street - eg if I park outside my own property blocking my driveway. Certainly I did so for several years in London (outside of yellow line hours) and despite a white line (H-Bar) across the driveway - without any complaint / parking tickets.

What I don't get about this one is these types of charges are only meant to cover loss... The parking company has shown their loss, by offering her a space, is £40 a month + legal fees/admin costs. How does a court rule 25k is correct?!
The fines were £100 each so that mounts up very quickly.Just shows you shouldn't take legal advice from Internet pals.

She won't pay it anyway. It's a symbolic victory to convince others to pay up.
If everyone ignores the system then it would collapse. I have no CCJ's but would happily take one if these monkeys took me to small claims court. And I'd never pay a penny. It's immoral and wrong to charge someone £25k to park outside their fathers home.

They are not fines... they are charges to compensate for loss..... Just shows you shouldn't take legal advice from Internet pals.

And the judge agreed they would all need to be paid so fines or charges to compensate this girl needs to pay them.
No... it's a stupid decision. 25k will get overturned at appeal, the whole thing is a complete waste of courts time. Any sensible Sheriff (or magistrate for the English lot) would have awarded something like 1-2k max + legal costs to the parking company.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
