Dressing the AJP
Discussion
There is a coating I saw when I went to the powder coasters, it was ceramic based but was very thin so would show a lot of the detail unlike powder coat which is very thick. It takes lots of heat ( can coat exhaust manifolds ) and is very hard wearing but was a few quid if I remember but if you got a lot done at the same time?......
You can spray that ceramic coating on the engine parts if your engine was in bits so I presume it isn't and that you want to paint it virtually complete?,
You could go for a good quality engine enamel, just make sure it goes over alloy if not it will need to be primed first.
2k Epoxy mastic is supposed to be good but don't know what sort of temperatures it can handle but it is very tough.
There was another coating that was for the marine industry that was good at everything but I can't remember it's name, someone on here or Facebook was going to do their stripped chassis with it.

Thanks again all.
Aide, I had always thought that shot peening was for stress relief on engine internals (eg rods) rather than a surface dressing for the outside but I will read that link fully when I get a mo.
Jon, yes, POR15 is looking favourite at present but I think I'd rather spray it, does brushing give a good enough finish? (not that you can see much of anything once the engine is installed!).
The other possibility is a hi-tech stoved ceramic resin; I've found a place that does this nearer to me, 'Hi-Spec Coatings' in West Sussex. I've not been aware of these guys unlike the other suspects, Zircofortune, Camcoat and Performance1...does anyone have any experiences? (PM me if appropriate)

Got these parts back from the aqua-blasters yesterday...

Very impressed, they look like new (compare to this 'before' pic
)

These are not painted yet, just sprayed with GT75, a 'maintenance spray'; the chap told me that aqua-blasting closes the surface pores like 'shot peening'
and parts coated with GT75 (and therefore I'd imagine ACF50 too) will not corrode unless washed with something aggressive like TFR/truckwash.

Collected my block, sump etc from ceramic coating at Hi-Spec Coatings in Billingshurst today. Beautiful job, well pleased. Seriously considered eating my supper off it tonight, sushi/geisha style.
This post is useless without pics..

Patience, patience, Mr Jhonno, all will be revealed in due course!
