Was pinged this afternoon heading into a 30 zone by a group in hi viz.

I'm pretty sure I was under the speed limit as I saw the traffic ahead panic braking, just wondered if these people were do gooders or if they have official powers?

Probably a local "community speedwatch" group. They're semi-official. If they note you down, they pass the plate to plod, who'll give you a postal bking. Not much more they can do than that, though. If they do get a lot of pings, then you might find that one day the dayglo isn't all civvy...

It is a community speedwatch operation.

They are usually coordinated by the police so in that respect they have a link to official powers but their normal function is deterrence and the issue of letters to persitant offenders.

There is no reason whatsoever why their evidence cannot be used to support a prosecution for excess speed.

It is not likely that there will be routine prosecutions from their activity but it would be a perverse decision, say, to ignore someone detected at 60mph in a 30mph speed limit when that is something that simply should be dealt with at court.

Its community busy bodies. You just get a warning letter through if you're going slow enough for a geriatric to write your plate down.

My arse.

No reason whatsoever? Really?

If you're going to participate in a (generally) knowlegeable forum, at least get the basics right.

What are the reasons why the evidence cannot be used in a speeding prosecution? Let's see what knowledgeable contribution you can make as you have sugested that the evidence cannot be used.

Go-ahead.

Generally because the people using the kit are not trained properly and the cost of training geriatric hobbyists does not make sense.

Main thing they all fk up on is targeting every car when they should be making a decision a car is speeding, then targeting the car.... That's not to say some new tech couldn't get approval to allow these lot to gather evidence for prosecution.

Don't you agree they appear to have picked an extremely hazardous stretch of road to spring the trap on people? Most likely outside their own house....

It was you that stated there was NO REASON blah blah....

(...and I didn't say the evidence couldn't be 'used'.)

However, let's try this for starters. Competence to operate said machinery (within the parameters of the law). Check. NOT.

Your move.

we had a spate of this in our village, only lasted a couple of weeks i think the rest of the locals voicing their displeasure at the activities of the senior citizens made them re think their contribution to village harmony

So, what is the problem with it ?

Is it not a fact that if it were Police you would get a ticket ?

That is not a road where you should be doing more than 30mph is it ?

the problem i have with it is it generally tends to be a small sub set of a small community, which leads to tension with in that community.

normally the police and safety camera teams dont tend to "work" where they live for very good reasons

This.

But they're NOT police. They're civilians (usually on the cusp of expiring) and have NO legal enforcement powers over any of the rest of us, other than that which we have over them.

I don't disagree with the sentiment; I do disagree with self-righteousness.

Me? I'd fit a cheap (relatively) average speed camera system throughout the myriad of linear villages across the country.

My own included.

Sorry Black but you really don't know what you're talking about.

The "gear" they are using is pretty much automatic. There's no need to form an opinion of speed since the "operators" just observe what the kit tells them. All they will do is note the registration plate, make, model, colour and time of any vehicle travelling at 110% + 2 mph or more of the limit as identified by the kit. (Typically, under these conditions the indicated speed within the vehicle will be considerably in excess of the speed limit). There are 3 people because one will note the first half of the registration, one wiil note the second half and one will write the information down. It's really not difficult: even you might be able to manage. And that's ALL the training that is required.

There are a number of guidelines that the volunteers have to adhere to......but the people in the photo appear to be on side here: hi-viz, in clear view - not sitting in a car, not sitting on chairs, not having a picnic etc, etc.

I'm really not sure why anyone would have a problem with this since we all take driving seriously and that includes good observation of (sensible) speed limits and other hazards (not to mention blokes dressed in hi-viz).
