Hi all,

Looking to trade the factory fitted switchable PSE on my 981 for the standard exhaust (too noisy for me!). Car has done 20k and exhaust in good nick. Chatted to RPMtechniq and they are happy to change. Located in London.

Cheers,

Matt

Have you tried/drove one without sport exhaust to compare? I can't say I notice a massive difference between standard exhaust and sports exhaust when switched off!

Is yours a 2.9 or 3.4? My S (standard exhaust) is too quiet! Are you looking at a straight swap? Mine is at RPM in a few weeks for some brakes. Paul.

Hi Paul,

Mine is the 981 3.4 S also. Yep driven without and prefer the quieter standard exhaust (must be getting old!). How many miles has yours done? Convenient that you have a trip to RPM planned already!

Just asked RPM and they charge 2.5k to supply/fit the PSE so thought a price to you of 1.5k seemed fair? Majority would go to RPM for the swap and the remainder to me (compensates for the drop in resale value). If RPM noticed anything wrong with either exhaust then we can reserve the option to back out or owner can pay cost to repair. How does that sound to you?

Thanks,

Matt

I have a 981 3.4 standard system - done 5K miles - available for sale if that is of any interest. £250.

In Billericay Essex.

Mine is 21.5k miles, but I've had quotes for around £2k for a new one, so would prefer that if I was going to swap thanks. The one for £250 looks a good bet.
Cheers, Paul.

Sorry, just to be clear - does this mean there is actually 3 different 'volumes/sound' of exhaust?

Standard
PSE off (valves closed) - louder than above
PSE on (valves open) - even louder again

I honestly thought that PSE off was (near as makes no difference) the same as a standard exhaust. My mistake, it seems.

I'm pretty sure the standard exhaust is larger - and therefore quieter than PSE- so your 3 sounds are my understanding.

Just to be clear. It's not just a case of swapping the exhausts to get the full PSE effect. That price above includes about ten hours of installation and there are about fifteen other parts required as well as the exhaust to do the install, including a new switch array which alone costs one hundreds and fifty pounds.

In addition changing to the standard exhaust you will need to do something with all the vacuum pipes that activate the PSE.

I recently bought a full PSE kit including all the bits for five hundred on eBay. Even then it would cost me approx another eight hundred pounds for the full install.

Standard exhaust is much quieter than PSE in off mode. Plus there are actually more sounds because whether Sport is on or off affects how much noise in the PSE (not so much in the standard exhaust). Installing the PSE there is an ECU update that creates most of the crackles and pops you hear with PSE.

Well there you go! Learn something new...etc. The standard exhaust must be bloody whisper quiet - I find PSE off really civilised.

So:

Standard exhaust
PSE off
PSE on
PSE on & Sport mode on

Any change for Sport+?

There is PSE off / Sport on, as an option.

Sport+ is actually slightly quieter than Sport, Sport+ is a max performance mode and doesn't bother with wasting petrol for purely aural stimulation rather than any performance gain. This difference is more pronounced in the 718 models but still exists in 981.

As I understand it on the 718 in Sport+ the petrol is switched off when you lift off but the throttle kept open to keep the turbo spinning so (I assume) there shouldn't be any pops and bangs on the overrun. In Sport this doesn't happen - so you get a bit more lag and waste some petrol.

Just had a PSE fitted on my 981 S, still have the standard exhaust in the garage if you are interested (car had done 10k when changed) -£150.

Yes, this was my experience at the PEC with both manual and PDK equipped 2.0 718 Caymans. You get the pops and bangs in Sport mode, irrespective of PSE, none in either normal or sport+.
