Hi,

Having recently sold a Cayenne, I'm looking to replace it with either a Lexus RX450h F Sport or an Infiniti FX/QX70 3.0 D Premium.

Having driven both, I prefer the looks and interior of the Infiniti, however with the hate for Diesels, the Lexus may prove the better long-term bet.

As you will be aware, the specification of both cars are excellent. The Infiniti just shades the Lexus in this regard.

My father has a Lexus RX at present, and had another around 10 years ago. Both, as you would expect have been fantastically reliable. However, it is quite an uninvolving car to drive.

Infiniti appear to be extremely reliable too, going by reports on US forums. There is not much of an owners club in the U.K. due to their low sales figures.

I am looking to spend up to £22K, which could mean either a 2012 Lexus or a 2014 Infiniti.

Running costs seem to favour the Lexus, however having run a Cayenne for nigh on 7 years either will be a saving. I don't wish a petrol Infiniti, as my days of averaging 15mpg are over....

I intend to keep either for 4-5 years.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, TIA....

Hi,

Well...just so happens I've had a 958 Cayenne 3.0 diesel and the Mrs a RX450h F Sport...and I've also driven the FX!

Loved the Cayenne and was very sorry to see it go.

As for the RX...completely different drive to the Cayenne. No surprises there. But that's just it - the RX reminds me of the Cadbury Caramel bunny saying 'taking it easy'. It's a CVT so don't expect miracles there either. It's not a slow car but I've never felt it too eager to get up and go. The tech would have moved on massively since your Dad's car. The Sport also comes with a decent heads up display for example. Reliability wise...for me it would have to be the Lexus.

Economy wise on the RX check out my fuelly page: http://www.fuelly.com/car/lexus/rx450h/2013/normsk...

If you have any questions ask away smile

I'm surprised the Lexus only manages 18-19mpg at that point OP I'd consider a petrol Infiniti.as it will be around the same mpg

If an RX450 is only managing 18-19mpg, something's broken, or you're driving it like a boy-racer. We have one and it averages just over 30mpg, either in town, on a long motorway journey or anything in between. They're remarkably economical for the size of vehicle.

Rubbish isn't it. We've actually had two loan cars from the dealer to ensure ours wasn't broken. Alas it's down to her driving 'style'. A little binary shall we say. I've found that hybrids need to be driven in a certain way to get the max out of them. Unfortunately it's a wasted conversation on her...

US vs. UK gallons at work here? I'd expect lower with the smaller US gallon.

I used to get 35mpg (UK) out of my 450h driven normally but closer to 8mpg when driven carefully.

Loved my 450h, really comfy and dependable car. However it was not a drivers car, suited to wafting about.

Thanks all for your comments.

I think my preference would be the Infiniti, but having been mucked about by 2 different dealers over 2 cars for the past 3 weeks it may change my view....

Any more comments are welcome, and I'll keep you all posted on my decision....

Personally, I would be a little wary of the Infiniti, just because the brand hasn't really taken off here and I'd be a little concerned about the dealer support, especially given the maintenance and warranty issues that were reported in the long thread in Jap Chat - I see you are aware of the thread OP.

I'd be A LOT more comfortable with Lexus myself.

I had a lexus Rx400h changed it for a new 2012 infiniti FX 3.0d executive ran that for 3 years and have now got a RX450h 2012 model.
My thoughts.

Infiniti better looking, head turner and I preferred the interior. way better to drive than the Rx. Dealer network patchy and no new model for ages to replace it with hence the change.

Rx450h is smooth and nice to drive as long as you don't try to drive it hard. Then the awful CVT and sloppy handling let it down. Interior is a nice place to be (I have premier spec) but i still prefer the infiniti. Lexis has a much bigger boot.
Lexus dealers are fantastic and the warranty is good value (495 for 2 years).

Needless to say nothing goes wrong with either car compared to my previous experience with Porsche cayenne and my current Merc CL600. My current car is only in the garage for routine servicing.

In summary- both great reliable cars. Lexus better dealer back up. Infiniti more fun to drive and looks better.

Hi all, thanks for your responses and observations.

I have put a deposit down on an Infiniti FX Premium S, and should be picking it up on Thursday. For me the looks, sportier drive, interior and exclusivity due to lower sales swung it in its favour.

I know Lexus dealership experiences and reliability are second to none, however I have also received good experience with my local Infiniti dealer, and I would expect it to be a reliable car.

Time will tell, and thanks again for your input.
