Just had final round interview - Been told wait around 2 wks

Been in the process since January. Are they for real?

Also took my certs, passport, proof id etc.

Do they do all these checks before offering or something?

It's a huge organisation and fairly archaic.

As for the rest, waiting for two weeks to hear about the result of a job interview is hardly unusual. You appear to be experiencing First World Problem trauma. Some employers check stuff, others don't. Much depends on the type of job and the type of business in question. The checks relating to a minimum wage job in a petrol station are not the same as those relating to a job in secret alien weapons research.

Thats pretty quick for some organisations HR depts.

When I landed a job at one of the Big Four, it took 6 months from initial contact to starting work.

Yep, I started interviewing in January - just finished now and due to start in June!

If it is a job you want it is worth waiting for.

My new one took a while too, My first interview was in late January/early February (had 3 in total) and got the job offer last week.

It's pretty normal.

Let's see now. Longest process I had?

First week of Jan. First interview. HR lady spent half of it on her BB.
Second Interview in March.
Third interview in April.
Verbally offered job in June.
Written job offer given in August.
Boss was a total and utter knob.

Any firm that takes > 1 month you have to ask yourself is it worth working for them

Consider the following possibilities -

(1) an employer may have regulatory obligations, and may have to take some time to comply with those obligations before hiring someone;

(2) in some employments, there have to be checks on things such as criminal records - this takes time;

(3) if the job involves Secret Squirrel stuff, there may be a need for security checks and even developed vetting;

(4) even in boggo jobs, it can take time to chase down references, make sure that a person is able to work lawfully in the UK, and so on.

Or, an employer may just be a ponderous and slow moving organisation.

Is the job for a Tier 1 Investment Bank - or have you lowered your standards?

The last line sounds the most plausible reason. I do like the idea of it being secret squirrel stuff and the OP not being aware of it being the reason for the delay though. Perhaps he just slipped and accidentally filled in a DV form. Get out quick before the black helicopters just turn up for you in the night!

If this job were for mega bucks I'd wait, otherwise it would certainly put me off.

The bigger the organisation the slower they move...

When you say "you've been in the process since January" does that mean you sent in the application form in January? or that 1st Interview was in January? If the former then it would be relatively normal for 2nd Interviews to be in April.

Also is it a "new" role or replacing an existing member of staff? If the former then chances are there is no rush to fill the vacancy as there is no job that needs to be covered.

(5) The role hasn't been approved yet so can't offer until has been signed-off, if it is ever signed-off.

My security clearance came through in around 5 - 6 weeks and was a condition of the offer

Strangely, my father, who has a somewhat interesting past with the ladies, took an almost daily interest in whether I'd heard back from DBS NSV. He audibly breathed a sigh of relief when I told him it I received it..!

I only hold SC as all my work is done outside of the UK in "lairy places", meaning that DV would be a complete waste of money and I just don't need it for what I do and the clients I engage with. To be honest, I doubt I'd get DV due to the countries and organisations I meet and the attendant risk. However, if I did, it is up to a 3 month process with multiple interviews with government vetters. For my colleagues joining the UK side of our business, it's often a mandatory requirement and can take many months to come through.

The black helicopters got me long ago - hence the tinfoil trousers. I wasn't addressing the OP's situation, as I assume that he has applied for a job as temporary acting deputy assistant bloke who takes the bins out at Maccy Dee's. I was addressing someone else's general point that if the employer makes you wait a bit then the employer is probably a load of old toss.

As for Secret Squirreling, I found it mildly hilarious when I was given security clearance for some Government gigs a while back, despite being closely related to assorted crazed Fenian bomb throwers; but the spooks didn't seem to mind, so long as I was up front about the noble family tradition of terrorism.

I get asked for references for ex members of staff from time to time. Sometimes it takes me a week to remember who they were, never mind actually respond.

Maybe the OP's previous boss doesn't give a fk about his new job?
