I've always used Mobil 1 5W-50 (I think it used to be 15w-50 but that's no longer available) but I am sure there's other thoughts on the matter.

for a little top up i wouldn't have thought the grade was too critical so long as your sure it was a synthetic, that bit does matter.

Not really.

All modern engine oils will play nicely with each other now. I wouldn't recommend it, but there's no harm in topping up with semi synthetic, or full mineral oil.

You'll only be diluting slightly your fully synthetic oil's friction modifiers, corrosion inhibitors and the like. The mineral / semi synthetic oil will have them too, but in a slightly different blend. Synthetic oils will nearly always perform better at higher temperatures, and more severe conditions, for longer, while maintaining their corrosion inhibiting and lubricity properties.

There's a LOT of misinformation on this site about oil.

In a pinch, more or less any motor oil will suffice. But get a can of fully synthetic oil at the correct grade and you'll always be prepared in the event you do need to top up a bit.
