My S1 will not start with the dashboard removed. Sounds liike the immobiliser is stopping from firing porperly. Is this because of a voltage drop being sensed due to having the dials and switches removed?

Does the ignition go through the rev counter?

Phillpott is right. On the S1 the revcounter has to be in circuit or the engine will not fire up. Check your wiring diagram for details.

Thanks for that tip, fired up first time, BUT! confused It is now down two pots by the sound of it, very lumpy. Refitted the oil and volts gauges but still not running right. Normally it is perfect and runs like a dream. Any ideas anyone?

Flooded/dirty plugs from when you tried to start it with the ignition disabled? If it runs at all, it's unlikely to be anything fundamental and is probably specific to the affected cylinders, and that doesn't leave very many suspects.

Have the plug leads been off? - easy to get the wrong sequence and then be two pots down.

Have not had leads off plugs so sequence cannot be wrong, but will take each lead off and remove each plug for inspection.
Thanks.
