So, I had a 250 mile each way commute on clogged up motorways last week. I looked at my 997.2 Carrera S manual and then borrowed my wife's 8 year old xc90 diesel automatic.

Easier in the traffic, not on and off the clutch, smooth riding and relaxed, albeit old dog slow!!

I am not getting rid of the Porsche - epic on its day for a decent drive, but think I need to add another auto, smoothie for the slogging. And if I am doing it, I might as well have space for my comfort.

Auto, commodious, smooth - up to £20k cash or a lease... suggestions? Old Rangie (v8, reliability?), Merc E class estate, ML, new Skoda Superb....Golf R? What should I be looking at?

All thoughts welcomed...

Why not get a mustang ecoboost 2.3 auto?

If you have 20k to spare, but don't purchase one just lease. 2 year lease you'll prob be looking 8k in total?

If not go for a vw golf R 5 dr DSG. Practical with performance

The family car is an E500. Not the AMG lunacy, a normal looking E class that could be a minicab.

Air suspension, an auto box and a near silent V8 (unless you step on it) makes it a very effortless way to do miles.
It does like a bit of fuel though.

Not too sure how a golf r fits that brief.

A 5 series or e class is of some description would fit the brief, but with all the current question marks regarding diesels might not be the way to go.

Maybe a Lexus gs300h? It will be slow, but reliable and no concerns about future values, bans etc...

Surely that what large Lexus (lexuses? Lexi?) were built to do?
Other options are BMW 7 series, Audi A8 or S class Mercedes. Get a proper big waftmobile, as long as you keep the Porsche it'll be nice to have something completely different.

Buy a Lexus.

Reasonably cheap, does everything you need, and you're unlikely to find yourself being clobbered anytime soon if you drive and park in cities.

Thanks all. Good thoughts all.

Had not really thought of the Lexi. My dad has an old LS400 that has been epic and will not die.

I assume the suggestions are hybrid; hence safe for cities?
I am not too worried about costs as it will not be a big mileage, but I am too grumpy and impatient for unreliability. Another point in favour of Lexus.

I fancy a RR but suspect the reality would be very disappointing at that budget.... all good fun!

Partly that, plus broadly speaking you just don't hear of them going wrong.

Easy to buy a 10 year old "giant" for not a lot of money but when a RR or old Merc goes wrong it can cost a small fortune - stating the obvious I know.

Not sure what your fuel allowance is like though...

A v8 Landcruiser would be similar to the RR without the reliability issues.

Jaguar XJR/Super V8?
Very comfortable suspension, 400+bhp and over 30mpg on a run.

That is just stunning. I suspect it could bankrupt me on a capricious whim...
I genuinely wish that I was brave enough for that.... hmmm.

Just think of a nice summers day, driving down to a nice country pub in a Bentley with the windows down....
If one were brave enough I think that's probably one of the best ones around at the moment. I've lusted after one since I was a young lad but I'll be waiting a couple more years yet.

I genuinely don't get the appeal of something like that; so vast everyday journeys would become a knightmare of pre planning, avoiding narrow roads, not using car parks etc. Repair bills would be ruinous as would general running costs. They aren't particularly fast. Ride and interior comfort aren't that great either. The only thing they seem to do well is make a statement. A newer continental could be had for not too much more. A better all round car apart from the very different statement it makes.
All that said it does appear to be a very nice example.

I think that's the key thing about being a car enthusiast, the desire to own vehicles that are utterly unpractical, ruinous to own, impossible to park and completely unjustifiable. None of my non car friends understand why I end up owning things like 20 year old BMW's or MX5's when I could have a nice new Audi on lease.
In relation to the Continental GT, I've actually always quite liked them, but yesterday I saw a fat lad in his early twenties driving one, back to front cap and loud tunes blaring out of it. Now he may have worked hard to earn it, or it may have been his dad's, I don't know, but it ruined the car a little bit for me ( I know, I sound a bit snobby).

you want comfort, and presumably also reliability should be key here. Think you nailed it already with the Superb, although if youre not carrying rear passengers the octavia shoukd be plenty, the main advantage of superb is the extra rear passenger legroom.

Citroen C6 if you are more willing to take a chance on reliability and dont give a st about residual value or image. Cant imagine you picking that though, I mention it only due to the amazing ride quality that hydro suspension has.

You'd get a pretty good used S class for 20k, hard to fault that as a choice
