A hard up friend has just mentioned she has 'had to open' a Basic Bank Account. I appreciate these are for people with such poor credit that the bank won't provide an overdraft facility. Don't wish to pry, but roughly speaking how deep st must she be in for this to happen. She did have a normal account before, and I know she has a mortgage and still has her flat so assumed she hasn't been bankrupt.

It's possible she's doing an IVA and has had to open an account with a bank with which she has no debt. If she's in the st that badly then a basic account without overdraft would be all they'd give her as a new 'customer'.

I'm not sure what is the problem with having to open up a "basic" bank account. She wouldn't be able to open anything if she was really in the s**t. PM me if you chat privately.

I have a basic account with the Coop don't need an overdraft and you don't get hassled for credit cards or other financial products.
